Background: Parental psychiatric disorders can have a significant impact on child development and the parent-infant bond, with a high risk of attachment disorders. Early identification of difficulties in the parent-child relationship is essential to prevent consequences for the child. Childcare practitioners have a major role to play in this early detection process, through regular mandatory consultations during the first two years of a child's life.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a common and severe disorder characterized by unstability of self-image, unstable affect, and unstable interpersonal relationships. Women with BPD would give birth as much as other women, but according to several studies, BPD mothers have a reduced sensitivity to their babies and a poor interpretation of their emotions; this would interfere in mother-baby interaction and in psycho-affective development of the baby, with the risk to develop psychiatric pathologies in adulthood. In this context several professionals have developed different interventions for mothers suffering from BPD.

Article Synopsis
  • Young patients with anorexia nervosa often struggle during the transition from Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services to Adult Mental Health Services, which can result in disengagement from care.
  • A study involved 16 physicians from different specialties who shared their views on this transition, identifying it as a challenging and often negative experience characterized by a lack of adequate support.
  • The findings suggest a need for tailored transitions that prioritize patient needs over age, along with improved physician training on managing patient autonomy to facilitate a smoother transition experience.

: In 2015 nearly 140 million children and adolescents under 18 had experienced the death of one or both parents. Parental death is often considered the most traumatic event that a child can experience in their lifetime. • This systematic review aimed to evaluate how the French national health insurance information system has been utilized for mental health research, covering a population of 67 million people.
  • A total of 152 studies were analyzed, revealing a trend of increasing publications over time, primarily focusing on adults and largely emphasizing pharmacoepidemiological research on psychotropic medications.

Article Synopsis
  • Over the last decade, there's been a notable rise in antidepressant use among children and adolescents in many Western countries, but there's a lack of recent data specific to France.
  • A study analyzed data from 2009 to 2016, revealing a slight overall increase in usage among adolescents while usage among younger children decreased, with notable gender trends in prescribing patterns.
  • The findings indicate that while antidepressant use in French youth remains stable and lower than in other countries, there's a shift in specific medications prescribed, with increased reliance on serotonin reuptake inhibitors in adolescents and changing patterns of off-label use.
