Article Synopsis
  • Metabolic syndrome (MetS) includes conditions like obesity, high blood pressure, and high blood sugar, increasing the risk for diseases such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
  • The study proposes that the loss of beneficial gut amoebas, alongside modern dietary changes, could contribute to the rise of MetS.
  • Experiments with mice showed that colonization with a specific amoeba improved gut health and reduced fat accumulation in the liver when compared to those on a high-fat diet.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) etiology is multifactorial. Luminal microRNAs (miRNAs) have been suspected to play a role in the promotion of chronic inflammation, but the extent to which fecal miRNAs are interacting with the intestinal ecosystem in a way that contribute to diseases, including IBD, remains unknown. Here, fecal let-7b and miR-21 were found elevated, associated with inflammation, and correlating with multiple bacteria in IBD patients and IL-10 mice, model of spontaneous colitis.

The present study aims at clarifying the poorly known phylogenetic relationships and systematics of cestodes of the family Davaineidae Braun, 1900 (Cyclophyllidea), primarily the genus Raillietina Fuhrmann, 1920 and of the subfamily Inermicapsiferinae (Anoplocephalidae) from mammals (mostly rodents, 31 new isolates) and birds (eight new isolates). Phylogenetic analyses are based on sequences of the large subunit ribosomal RNA gene (28S) and mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunit 1 gene (nad1). The main phylogenetic pattern emerging from the present analysis is the presence of three independent lineages within the main clade of the subfamily Davaineinae, one of which is almost entirely confined to species from rodents and the other two show a mixture of species from birds and mammals.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent findings of Nova virus (NVAV) and Bruges virus (BRGV) in European moles in Belgium and Germany led researchers to investigate hantaviruses in Iberian moles in Spain.
  • Analysis of lung tissue from 106 Iberian moles revealed the presence of genetically distinct hantaviruses, including NVAV, BRGV, and a new strain identified as Asturias virus (ASTV).
  • The study challenges the traditional view that each hantavirus species is linked to a single host, demonstrating that hantaviruses can be shared among different small mammals and that host-switching and reassortment events contribute to their diversity.

Background & Aims: Although appendectomy may reduce colorectal inflammation in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC), this surgical procedure has been suggested to be associated with an increased risk of colitis-associated cancer (CAC). Our aim was to explore the mechanism underlying the appendectomy-associated increased risk of CAC.

Methods: Five-week-old male BALB/c mice underwent appendectomy, appendicitis induction, or sham laparotomy.

Objective: We used the postoperative recurrence model to better understand the role of adherent and invasive (AIEC) bacteria in Crohn's disease (CD), taking advantage of a well-characterised postoperative cohort.

Design: From a prospective, multicentre cohort of operated patients with CD, AIEC identification was performed within the surgical specimen (M0) (N=181 patients) and the neoterminal ileum (n=119 patients/181) during colonoscopy performed 6 months after surgery (M6). Endoscopic postoperative recurrence was graded using Rutgeerts' index.

Article Synopsis
  • Parasite data can provide insights into the evolution and behavior of their human hosts, making them useful for tracing host evolution.
  • A comprehensive analysis of parasites impacting humans reveals that about 74% are rare, with the Palearctic region showing the greatest diversity in parasite species.
  • The study suggests that domesticated animals share more parasites with humans, and a significant portion of these parasites inhabit or enter through the digestive system, highlighting the relationship between human activity and parasite diversity.

Background And Aims: Patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are exposed to drug-related nephrotoxicity and kidney-related extra-intestinal manifestations (EIMs). Patients should be monitored but guidance is lacking in current international recommendations. The objective of the Kidney Function Monitoring in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (MONITORED) initiative was to achieve an expert consensus about monitoring kidney function in IBD.

Captive chimpanzees living in confined environments like sanctuaries or primatology centers are frequently affected by gastrointestinal parasites. Some of these are likely to be transmitted to humans and may seriously affect public health. However little information is currently available on the gastrointestinal parasites of primates living in such environments.

  • This study evaluates the reliability of three different ELISA assays for measuring infliximab trough levels (IFX-TL) and antibodies against infliximab (ATI) in children with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD).
  • The findings show that the three assays provide comparable IFX-TL results with a strong statistical correlation, though there are some discrepancies in therapeutic interval classifications, especially with one specific assay.
  • Overall, while the assays agree well, caution is advised in interpreting results that are close to therapeutic thresholds due to potential variations in classifications.

Article Synopsis
  • TNF-α inhibitors, commonly used for chronic inflammatory diseases, can sometimes trigger unexpected immune-mediated inflammatory reactions, known as paradoxical effects.
  • This study presents three cases of paradoxical chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis in patients being treated with infliximab or adalimumab for Crohn disease, all of whom experienced bone pain without joint issues.
  • Despite being in remission from their Crohn disease, patients developed these symptoms after 2 to 26 months of anti-TNF therapy, but all recovered after stopping the medication, highlighting the need for clinicians to recognize such rare side effects.
