Theory of Mind (ToM) is compromised in schizophrenia, and responsible for social disability. We aim to study the correlation between ToM deficits and Executive Functions (EF), using the Faux Pas Test (FPT) for ToM evaluation, Behavioral Assessment of the Dysexecutive Syndrome (BADS) and Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) for EF assessment. Two groups of patients with schizophrenia were included: 22 young (18-35 years-old) and 18 middle-aged (>50 years-old) Patients, compared to age-matched Controls.

The present study sought to identify factors associated with the onset of a manic or hypomanic episode during the month following a new antidepressant therapy in depressed bipolar patients. Patients receiving mood stabilizers for ≥3 months were screened from 400 French centers and were assessed for a 4-week period following prescription of a first or a new antidepressant. Of the 1242 included participants, 4.

Aims: Neuronal uncoupling proteins are involved in the regulation of reactive oxygen species production and intracellular calcium homeostasis, and thus, play a neuroprotective role. In order to explore the potential consequences of neuronal uncoupling proteins variants we examined their association in a sample of Caucasian patients suffering from schizophrenia and phenotyped them according to antipsychotic response.

Materials & Methods: Using a case-control design, we compared the frequencies of 15 genetic variants spanning UCP2, UCP4 and UCP5 in 106 French Caucasian patients suffering from schizophrenia and 127 healthy controls.

Introduction: Preliminary studies have suggested that balneotherapy (BT) is an effective and well-tolerated treatment for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and psychotropic medication withdrawal syndrome. We carried out a study in 4 spa resorts to assess the efficacy of BT in GAD.

Method: We compared BT to paroxetine in terms of efficacy and safety in a randomized multicentre study lasting 8 weeks.

Visual orienting tasks reveal an impaired disengagement of attention in schizophrenia. We explored visual orientation in 20 schizophrenia patients (SZ), 20 full siblings (FS), and 20 controls (C) using a cued target detection (gap vs. no gap) and a choice reaction time task.

Although the benefits of clozapine have been well demonstrated in resistant schizophrenia, the frequency of adverse events is of particular concern: up to 76% of patients to whom clozapine was prescribed experienced an adverse event, with a discontinuation rate of 17%. In addition to its major clinical side effect, agranulocytosis, clozapine is reported to induce inflammatory syndromes with polyserositis. Apart from sparse case reports, no study has yet addressed this particularly interesting issue.

Many aspects of the motivation to eat are involved in the impairment of adequate food intake and body weight control. The aim of this study was to evaluate, by adopting widely used eating questionnaires, the Three Factors Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (TFEQ) and the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire (DEBQ), the associations of different antipsychotic medications with the food attitudes of 153 schizophrenic patients: we compared 93 individuals treated with atypical antipsychotics, 27 treated with conventional neuroleptics and 33 untreated patients. We did not find any difference according to sex, but the mean body mass index varied significantly among the three groups of patients.

Patients with bipolar disorders (BPD) display high rates of comorbidities, especially substance abuse (20-40%) and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (6%-20%). However, there are virtually no data evaluating the role of current ADHD on the global functioning of patients with BPD. The recent literature suggests that impairments in quality of life are a key prognostic feature for predicting the long course of BPD.

Current antidepressants used in major depressive disorder (MDD) are still not efficacious enough for many patients due to high levels of treatment resistance and bothersome side-effects. Using a novel blinding method (interactive voice response system), this flexible-dosing study examined the effects of therapeutic doses of agomelatine, a new approach to depressive therapy offering potent melatonergic MT1/MT2 receptor agonism with 5-HT2C receptor antagonist properties, in patients with moderate-to-severe MDD. This 6-wk, double-blind, parallel-group study randomized 238 patients to 25 mg/d agomelatine (with dose adjustment at 2 wk to 50 mg/d in patients with insufficient improvement) or placebo.

In France, high-dosage buprenorphine (HDB) is the main substitution treatment for narcotic addiction. Few data have been published concerning clinical factors predicting a good response to this treatment in a daily practice. A hospital-based multicenter clinical research program (PHRC) was undertaken in heroin-addicted patients, diagnosed according to DSM-III-R, to detect clinical criteria susceptible of predicting a good response to HDB administered during a 3-month treatment period.

Because Alzheimer's disease (AD) tends to be underdiagnosed, there is an increasing need for accurate neuropsychological screening tools that are easy to administer by general practitioners or specialists. The aim of the present study was to validate, in French, a sensitive and specific screening battery designed to improve the discrimination between patients with AD, patients with depression and healthy elderly subjects. The Short Cognitive Evaluation Battery (SCEB) consists of 4 brief tests: temporal orientation, 5-word test, clock-drawing test and a semantic verbal fluency task.
