A functional homologue (ung1) of the human uracil-DNA-glycosylase (UNG) gene was characterized from fission yeast (Schizosaccharomyces pombe). The ung1 gene is highly conserved and encodes a protein with uracil-DNA-glycosylase activity similar to human UNG.
