Socio-Motor Improvisation in Schizophrenia: A Case-Control Study in a Sample of Stable Patients.

Improvising is essential for human development and is one of the most important characteristics of being human. However, how mental illness affects improvisation remains largely unknown. In this study we focused on socio-motor improvisation in individuals with schizophrenia, one of the more debilitating mental disorder.

Detecting determinism in short time series using a quantified averaged false nearest neighbors approach.

We propose a criterion to detect determinism in short time series. This criterion is based on the estimation of the parameter E2 defined by the averaged false neighbors method for analyzing time series [Cao, Physica D 110, 43 (1997)]. Using surrogate data testing with several chaotic and stochastic simulated time series, we show that the variation coefficient of E2 over a few values of the embedding dimension d defines a suitable statistic to detect determinism in short data sequences.

Dynamic stability of locomotor respiratory coupling during cycling in humans.

We explored the locomotor respiratory coupling (LRC) during a 50-min constant-load submaximal cycling exercise. A 4-week recombinant human erythropoietin (r-HuEPO) treatment improved participants' aerobic capabilities, but did not elicit significant changes in LRC. The distributions of the respiratory frequency over pedalling frequency ratios were systematically bimodal, with a preferred use of 1/3 and 1/2, and a progressive shift of the higher mode from 1/3 towards 1/2 with exercise duration.

Injections of recombinant human erythropoietin increases lactate influx into erythrocytes.

Previous studies showed that erythropoietin not only increases erythrocyte production but is also essential in both the synthesis and the good functioning of several erythrocyte membrane proteins, including band 3. It is still unknown whether anion and/or H(+) fluxes are modified by erythropoietin. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) injections on lactate transport into erythrocytes via band 3 and H(+)-monocarboxylate transporter MCT-1, two proteins involved in lactate exchange.
