During the pre-surgical evaluation of drug-resistant epilepsy, the assessment of the extent of the epileptogenic zone and its organization is a crucial objective. Indeed, the epileptogenic zone may be organized as a simple focal lesional site or as a more complex network (often referred to as the 'epileptogenic network') extending beyond the lesion. This distinction is particularly relevant in developmental lesions such as focal cortical dysplasias or dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumours and may determine both the surgical strategy and the prognosis.

Background: Currently, the survival of patients age > 70 years with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) ranges from 4 months to 6 months, although radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy may prolong survival in certain subgroups. Temozolomide is an oral chemotherapeutic agent with efficacy against malignant gliomas and a favorable safety profile. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) is a method enabling the analysis of the tissue metabolic content. It may offer a more accurate diagnosis of the intracranial tumors than conventional MRI sequences. MRS of normal brain parenchyma displays 4 main metabolites: N-acetyl aspartate (neuronal marker), creatine (cellular density marker), choline (membrane activity marker) and myoinositol (glial marker); pathological processes lead to variations of the level of these metabolites and/or the appearance of abnormal metabolites (lactate), following different patterns according to pathological process involved: glioma, meningioma, metastasis, bacterial or toxoplasmic abscess, radionecrosis.

Background: The modulation of extracellular adenosine concentration by opioids provides evidence that the antinociceptive effects of these compounds involve endogenous adenosine. The aim of this study was to determine whether there is a relation between the inhibition of brain synaptosome adenosine uptake by opioid agonists and the analgesic effects of these compounds.

Methods: The authors used the hot plate and tail-pinch tests to evaluate in mice (C57BL/6 females; weight, 25-30 g) the effects of caffeine, a nonspecific adenosine receptor antagonist, on the antinociceptive effect induced by the intracerebroventricular administration of oxymorphone as a mu agonist, SNC80 as a delta agonist, or U69593 as a kappa agonist.
