Background: The prevalence and impact of right ventricular dysfunction (RVD) in degenerative mitral regurgitation (DMR) is unknown. We aimed to determine whether RVD assessed by echocardiography in routine clinical practice is independently associated with mortality in patients with DMR.
Methods And Results: We used data from the MIDA-Q (Mitral Regurgitation International DAtabase-Quantitative) registry, which included patients with isolated DMR due to mitral valve prolapse from January 2003 to January 2020 from 5 tertiary centers across North America, Europe, and the Middle East.
Background: Long-term outcomes after acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD) are related to remodelling of the descending thoracic aorta and aortic reinterventions. We compared the impact of an extensive repair at the index procedure using the Frozen Elephant Trunk (FET) technique, versus a conventional arch repair, on long-term remodelling of the descending thoracic and reintervention related to the aorta.
Methods: Consecutive patients who underwent conventional arch repair (conventional group) or FET repair (FET group) for an ATAAD from September 2018 to November 2021 were included.
Background: Carmat bioprosthetic total artificial heart (Aeson; A-TAH) is a pulsatile and autoregulated device. The aim of this study is to evaluate level of hemolysis potential acquired von Willebrand syndrome after A-TAH implantation.
Methods: We examined the presence of hemolysis and acquired von Willebrand syndrome in adult patients receiving A-TAH support (n=10) during their whole clinical follow-up in comparison with control subjects and adult patients receiving Heartmate II or Heartmate III support.
Objectives: The carotid approach for transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has been shown to be feasible and safe. The goal of this study was to compare the 30-day outcomes of trans-carotid (TC) and transfemoral (TF) TAVR.
Methods: This retrospective study enrolled 500 consecutive patients treated by TC-TAVR (n = 100) or TF-TAVR (n = 400) with percutaneous closure between January 2018 and January 2020 at the Nantes University Hospital.
Objectives: At our centre, the SynCardia temporary Total Artificial Heart (TAH-t) (SynCardia Systems, LLC, Tucson, AZ, USA) is used to provide long-term support for patients with biventricular failure as a bridge to a transplant. However, a heart transplant (HT) after such support remains challenging. Purpose Of Review: Vascular injury is a complex process that is central to the rejection of solid-organ xenografts in the preclinical pig-to-primate model of xenotransplantation. This review summarizes recent work that provides insights into the mechanisms of vascular injury in GalT KO pig xenografts.
Recent Findings: Several groups have reported further evidence for the importance of preexisting and elicited non-GalT antibodies, which are capable of fixing complement and activating graft endothelial cells.
Background: When implanted in patients with biventricular failure, the CardioWest total artificial heart has asserted itself over time as a reliable bridge-to-transplant device that as yet is used by only a few international teams. The aim of this single-center retrospective study is to assess both the comorbidity and survival of patients awaiting heart transplants while receiving circulatory support with a CardioWest total artificial heart.
Methods: From 1990 to December 2006, 42 patients received a CardioWest total artificial heart at our center.
Objectives: The study was conducted to determine the long-term outcome of patients who underwent heart transplantation 15 to 20 years ago, in the cyclosporine era, and identify risk factors for death.
Methods: A retrospective analysis was done of 148 patients who had undergone heart transplantation between 1985 and 1991 at a single center. Operative technique and immunosuppressive treatment were comparable in all patients.
Postpneumonectomy syndrome is defined as an airway obstruction due to mediastinal shift and rotation after pneumonectomy. A patient who had undergone a left pneumonectomy for bronchial carcinoma 13 years before presented with tension pneumothorax of her remaining lung. Although all factors relevant to the development of postpneumonectomy syndrome were ascertained, the patient had a pneumothorax rather than an airway obstruction.
