Six kinds of chitooligosaccharides (COSs) with different molecular weight (MW) and degree of deacetylation (DD) were prepared using ultrafiltration membrane reactor, and their renin inhibition modes were evaluated. All the COSs showed the renin-inhibitory activities with dose-dependent manner, and 90-COSs had the potent renin-inhibitory activity than that of 50-COSs. Among them, 90-MMWCOS (1000-5000Da) exhibits the highest activity with IC(50) value of 0.

The e-beam lithography process was implemented with a careful evaluation of applied dosage, tests of different bake-out temperatures and durations for the photoresist, and the use of a developer without methylisobutylketone. Electrodeposition with a pulsed current mode and with a specially designed apparatus produced the desired high-aspect-ratio nanostructures.

Phase-contrast X-ray microscopy (PCXM) has potential to reveal the structures inside soft tissues, and fine details can be observed without any staining or contrast-enhancing cell preparation. We aimed to investigate the possibility that PCXM can be used to explore the microscopic details of basal cell carcinoma (BCC).

The correlation between the microscopic lattice plane curvature and the dislocation structure in thermal warpage of 200 mm-diameter Czochralski Si (001) wafers has been investigated using high-resolution X-ray diffractometry and topography. It is found that the (004) lattice plane curvature is locally confined between two neighboring slip bands, with the rotation axis parallel to the slip bands. High-resolution topography reveals that the curvature resulted from a fragmented dislocation structure.

In the present study the feasibility of applying synchrotron radiation to the morphological study of early-stage lung cancer has been investigated. Lewis lung cancer was implanted and grown in a nude mouse for different periods, and imaged using phase-contrast synchrotron X-rays. Morphological differences were clearly shown between the normal lung and cancerous tissues at this early stage.

The formation of colloidal unmodified (naked) gold nanoparticles is investigated by irradiation of a precursor solution with X-rays from a synchrotron source. An interesting morphological evolution as a function of exposure time, from cross-linked network-like structure to individual particles, has been discovered. The particle size decreased with the exposure time and was influenced by the ionic strength of the precursor solution.

Among hydrolysates, the pepsin-derived hydrolysate exhibited the highest ACE I inhibitory activity versus those of other enzyme hydrolysates. The structure of the peptide was identified to be Trp-Pro-Glu-Ala-Ala-Glu-Leu-Met-Met-Glu-Val-Asp-Pro (molecular weight 1581 Da) by time of flight mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry analysis, and the IC 50 value of the peptide was 21.

Antioxidant peptide from bullfrog muscle protein hydrolysate (APBMH) was purified using consecutive chromatographic methods, and the amino acid sequence was identified as being Leu-Glu-Gln-Gln-Val-Asp-Asp-Leu-Glu-Gly-Ser-Leu-Glu-Gln-Glu-Lys-Lys (molecular mass of 1,988 Da) by quantitative time-of-flight electrospray ionization mass spectroscopy. To assess antioxidant activities of APBMH, two different in vitro systems were employed: free radical scavenging activity by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy and polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) peroxidation inhibition assay.

They are thought to have channels through which some liquid with abundant hyaluronic acid (HA) flows. In the present work, the authors put forward a hypothesis to test that the Bonghan threads can be visualized in vivo by HA-staining dye, Alcian blue, and that the channels may be revealed by using X-ray microtomography.

The first molecular-level strategy is the extension of the conjugation path in the active chromophore. The second supramolecular-level strategy is the bottom-up nanoengineering of an inclusion complex of the chromophore in an amylose helix by self-assembly.

An immunochromatography (ICG) strip test for rapid detection of atrazine in water samples was developed. A monoclonal antibody (MAb) specific to atrazine was produced from the cloned hybridoma cell (AT-1-M3) and used to develop a direct competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (DC-ELISA) and ICG strip. MAb conjugated to colloidal gold, and that was applied to the conjugate pad of the ICG strip.

Nonviral gene delivery systems have been increasingly proposed as a safer alternative to viral vehicles. In the present study, we synthesized water-soluble chitin by aminoalkylating onto chitin at the C-6 position, and its transfection efficiency was investigated. Aminoethyl-chitin (AEC) was complexed with DNA, and AEC/DNA nanoparticles were characterized.

Six kinds of water-soluble chitosan were prepared by grafting aminofunctionality onto chitosan at the C-6 position, and their antimicrobial activities were investigated against three Gram-negative and three Gram-positive bacteria. Among the derivatives, dimethylaminoethyl-chitosan (DMAEC) has the highest potential to suppress the growth of bacteria. To elucidate detailed antimicrobial modes of action against bacteria, cell integrity, outer membrane (OM), and inner membrane (IM) permeabilization assays were investigated.

We used the unmonochromatized synchrotron X-ray to acquire in vivo real-time and ex vivo images of atherosclerotic lesions in apo E-knockout mice without contrast agents or staining.
Methods: In the five apo E-knockout mice (apo E-/-, 12, 24, 32, 48, 62-week-old, 3 males) and age/sex matched five wild type mice on cow diets, we acquired in vivo real-time images of thoracic aorta without contrast agents and then, the central arterial trees were dissected intact.
Parkinson's disease (PD), defined as a neurodegenerative disorder, is characterized by the loss of dopaminergic neurons and the presence of Lewy bodies in neurons. Morphological study of Lewy bodies is important to identify the causes and the processes of PD. Here, we investigate a possibility of phase contrast radiography using coherent synchrotron X-rays to explore the microscopic details of Lewy bodies in thick (approximately 3 mm) midbrain tissues.

Photoinduced electron/energy transfers (eT/ET) of the chromophores are investigated in the presence and absence of the helical encapsulation with respect to D-A distance. Fluorescence intensity of the free chromophores is unusually small, not due to the advancement of eT/ET but most likely to self-quenching by aggregation and/or conformational flexibility in solution.
