Purpose: The purpose of this study is to pool the evidence on the safety and efficacy of mechanical thrombectomy (MT) in patients who develop acute ischemic stroke (AIS) due to large vessel occlusion (LVO) following recent cardiac interventions.

Methods: PubMed, Embase and Scopus were searched from inception up to February 2024 using a combination of "cardiac interventions" and "mechanical thrombectomy" as keywords. Studies that evaluated AIS within 30 days of a recent cardiac intervention who underwent MT were included.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the mutation rate of the envelope (E) gene of SARS-CoV-2 in COVID-19 patients, focusing on its conformational characteristics.
  • Out of 120 patients, 10 nucleotide changes were found in the E gene, with 2 missense mutations (L73F and S68F) that alter amino acids, while most changes were silent.
  • The mutations were shown to introduce new helix structures in the E protein and potentially enhance its stability and binding to specific proteins, which could affect viral spread and immune cell response in the lungs.

Background: Full sternotomy is the standard approach for combined surgery. Evidence of the minimally invasive approach's advantages for aortic and mitral valve surgery has been reported. Our aim was to report our experience with minithoracotomy for elective patients presenting with aortic valve stenosis associated with right coronary artery disease.

Objective: About 25% of patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) present within the intravenous thrombolytic (IVT) therapeutic window of <4.5 h. This study is to elucidate the safety and efficacy of IVT in the extended therapeutic window (ETW) in patients with AIS.

Background: Transcranial Doppler (TCD) is a non-invasive, bedside tool that allows for real-time monitoring of the patient's hemodynamic status following mechanical thrombectomy (MT). This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to evaluate the predictive value of TCD parameters following successful MT (Thrombolysis in Cerebral Infarction 2b-3).

Methods: In July 2024, we searched PubMed, Embase, and Scopus, to identify observational studies in which TCD parameters were measured within 48 hours of MT.

Background: The existing evidence on the effect of dietary supplements for preventing migraines has generated conflicting results.

Methods: We assessed alterations in migraine clinical features corresponding to the intake of dietary supplements. Our main outcomes included the frequency (number of attacks), duration (in hours), the severity (intensity) and the monthly migraine days.

Article Synopsis
  • Antipsychotic drugs can negatively affect metabolic syndrome components, leading to metabolic disturbances in patients with schizophrenia, which this study aimed to address.
  • The study involved 70 schizophrenia patients on antipsychotics, divided into two groups receiving either a synbiotic supplement or placebo for 8 weeks, measuring various health indicators before and after the intervention.
  • Results showed that the synbiotic significantly reduced waist circumference and HbA1c levels and may help prevent BMI increases in those on antipsychotics, although some measures like LDL and triglycerides showed no significant difference compared to placebo.

Background: Heparin may be administered during mechanical thrombectomy (MT) for acute ischemic stroke due to large vessel occlusions (AIS-LVO), with the aim of enhancing reperfusion and improving patient outcomes. The uncertain balance between risks and benefits of administering heparin during MT prompted us to perform this systematic review and meta-analysis.

Methods: A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, and Scopus to find studies that report the safety or efficacy of administering heparin during MT for AIS-LVO.

Oil palm ( Jacq.) is a highly productive crop economically significant for food, cosmetics, and biofuels. Abiotic stresses such as low water availability, salt accumulation, and high temperatures severely impact oil palm growth, physiology, and yield by restricting water flux among soil, plants, and the environment.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study highlights the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of viral keratitis (VK) to improve patient outcomes, focusing on the role of antiviral medications and supportive care.
  • - Researchers analyzed samples from 162 patients suspected of ocular infections and found that 29.6% tested positive for various viruses, with the highest prevalence being varicella-zoster virus (VZV) and herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1).
  • - Multiplex real-time PCR was used for efficient viral diagnosis, revealing that aqueous humor samples were particularly effective for detecting VK, potentially changing how diagnoses are made and reducing unnecessary antibiotic use.

With increasing life expectancies and population aging, the incidence of elderly patients with grade 2 and 3 gliomas is increasing. However, there is a paucity of knowledge on factors affecting their treatment selection and overall survival (OS). Geriatric patients aged between 60 and 89 years with histologically proven grade 2 and 3 intracranial gliomas were identified from the National Cancer Database between 2010 and 2017.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the risk of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) associated with mechanical thrombectomy, both with and without the use of intravenous (IV) thrombolysis, in treating acute ischemic stroke due to large-vessel occlusion.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 9 studies involving 3,241 patients to compare the rates of symptomatic ICH between the two treatment methods.
  • Results indicate that the risk of symptomatic ICH was similar for both treatment options, suggesting that IV thrombolysis may not significantly increase the risk when combined with mechanical thrombectomy.

Background: Bladder cancer (BC) segmentation on MRI images is the first step to determining the presence of muscular invasion. This study aimed to assess the tumor segmentation performance of three deep learning (DL) models on multi-parametric MRI (mp-MRI) images.

Methods: We studied 53 patients with bladder cancer.

Article Synopsis
  • HPV significantly contributes to cancer by causing DNA damage and genome instability, which, along with oxidative stress, plays a key role in tumor development.
  • * Oxidative stress intensifies the carcinogenic effects of HPV by enhancing the integration of HPV into the host genome and increasing the expression of viral proteins E6 and E7.
  • * Lifestyle factors, genetic changes, and oxidative stress management—such as using dietary antioxidants—are vital for preventing and treating HPV-related cancers.

Background & Objectives: Currently, there is a significant focus on the decrease of soluble receptor of advanced glycation end products (sRAGE) in neurocognitive and neuropsychiatric disorders. sRAGE plays a decoy role against the inflammatory response of advanced glycation end products (AGE), which has led to increased interest in its role in these disorders. This meta-analysis aimed to investigate the significant differences in sRAGE levels between neurocognitive and neuropsychiatric disorders compared to control groups.

Background And Objectives: Host genetic changes like single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are one of the main factors influencing susceptibility to viral infectious diseases. This study aimed to investigate the association between the host SNP of Toll-Like Receptor3 (TLR3) and Toll-Like Receptor7 (TLR7) genes involved in the immune system and susceptibility to COVID-19 in a sample of the Iranian population.

Materials And Methods: This retrospective case-control study evaluated 244 hospitalized COVID-19 patients as the case group and 156 suspected COVID-19 patients with mild signs as the control group.

Studies showed that the respiratory is not the only system affected by coronavirus 2, while cardiovascular, digestive, and nervous systems, as well as essential organs such as the kidneys, can be affected by this virus. In this review, we have studied the epidemiology, clinical, and laboratory findings on COVID-19 infection renal involvement, mortality, physiopathology, remaining renal sequels after recovery, underlying renal disease, and renal injury due to its treatment. Also, protective measures for kidney injury are explained in three levels.
