In this letter to editor, I hypothesize a potential affinity of retinol saturase (RetSat) enzyme towards a conjugated trienoic fatty acid; alpha-eleostearic acid (α-ESA) and subsequent hindrance of the action on its usual substrate; all trans retinol. Hence, RetSat is speculated to be involved in a rapid unusual conversion of α-ESA to conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), giving a less priority to its usual substrate all trans retinol, which would subsequently be converted into "all trans retinoic acid" (atRA). Otherwise, all trans retinol is converted by RetSat into all-trans-13,14-dihydroretinol and eventually forms all-trans-13,14-dihydroretinoic acid, but not the atRA.

In addition to its role in the storage of fat, adipose tissue acts as an endocrine organ, and it contains a functional renin-angiotensin system (RAS). Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) plays a key role in the RAS by converting angiotensin I to the bioactive peptide angiotensin II (Ang II). To establish the effect of dietary omega-3 PUFA on angiotensin II (ANG II)-mediated hypertension, male TGR (mRen-2)27 (Ren-2) rats (animals with high ANG II activity) were maintained on a diet either deficient or sufficient in omega-3 PUFA from conception. Half the animals on each diet were treated with the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor, perindopril, from birth. Ren-2 rats fed the omega-3 PUFA deficient diet were significantly more hypertensive than those fed the omega-3 PUFA sufficient diet.

For the investigation of the mechanism responsible for the hypotriglyceridemic effect of NK-104, a new synthetic inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme for cholesterol synthesis, isolated rat liver was perfused with or without NK-104 in the presence of exogenous [1-(14)C]oleic acid substrate. Addition of NK-104 tended to increase the ketone body production while it caused a significant decrease in the secretion rate of triglyceride by the perfused liver without affecting uptake of exogenous [1-(14)C]oleic acid. The inhibitor also significantly decreased hepatic triglyceride concentration.

To estimate the relative significance of exogenous vs. endogenous fatty acids in increasing hepatic triacylglycerol secretion following an inhibition of fatty acid oxidation by emeriamine, livers from 2-d-fasting rats were perfused with or without an inhibitor in the presence of a geometrical isomer of linoleate (linolelaidic acid, trans,trans-9,12-octadecadienoic acid). Emeriamine added to the perfusion medium at 2 h of the recirculating perfusion period caused immediate and complete cessation of ketone body production while it increased triacylglycerol and cholesterol secretion by the liver without affecting uptake of exogenous linolelaidic acid.
