Clearance of psoriasis after ischemic stroke.

The role of the nervous system in the pathogenesis of psoriasis is not well elucidated. However, its involvement is clinically apparent with sparing of areas affected by neurologic disease, such as poliomyelitis, and remission of psoriasis in cases of nerve damage. Several neuropeptides, including substance P (SP), nerve growth factor, calcitonin gene-related peptide, and vasoactive intestinal peptide have been hypothesized to play a part in the development of psoriasis and its symptoms.

Fluconazole-associated Stevens-Johnson syndrome.

Fluconazole uncommonly causes Stevens-Johnson syndrome. A young Indian man who developed this adverse effect after his second dose of fluconazole is described. The characteristics of previously reported individuals with fluconazole-associated Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis are also summarized: three out of five of the patients were immunocompromised, five out of five were hospitalized, and all had complete resolution of this drug-induced condition.

Granuloma faciale: Case report and review.

Granuloma faciale (GF) is a rare benign chronic inflammatory dermatosis usually appearing only on the face. The lesions of GF typically present as single, asymptomatic, erythematous, non-changing nodules or plaques. We present an illustrative case of GF and briefly review available treatment options.

Genomewide clonal analysis of lethal mutations in the Drosophila melanogaster eye: comparison of the X chromosome and autosomes.

Using a large consortium of undergraduate students in an organized program at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), we have undertaken a functional genomic screen in the Drosophila eye. In addition to the educational value of discovery-based learning, this article presents the first comprehensive genomewide analysis of essential genes involved in eye development. The data reveal the surprising result that the X chromosome has almost twice the frequency of essential genes involved in eye development as that found on the autosomes.
