Single-stage posterior midline approach for dumbbell tumors of the thoracic spine, with intraoperative CT guidance.

Background: Several different procedures have been advocated for thoracic spine dumbbell tumor resection, combining thoracic and neurosurgical approaches, in single and multiple stages, using various incisions and positions. These have led to controversies in the ideal management. The authors report their analysis of a series of 11 patients successfully treated through a one-step midline approach for complete resection and instrumentation when indicated under intraoperative CT (ICT) guidance.

Acute dural sinus thrombosis following ingestion of an herbal tonic: case report.

Objective: The use of herbals and health supplements is not without risk. This case report of a 17-year-old girl who presented with acute dural sinus thrombosis following herbal tonic ingestion illustrates the dangers of unsupervised ingestion of "health supplements."

Subject And Methods: A 17-year-old girl with normal menses and no prior medical history, procoagulant risk factors, or oral contraceptives use, presented following ingestion of herbal liquid for 2 days, with signs and symptoms of dural sinus thrombosis confirmed by CT scan.

Neuroendovascular treatment is increasingly being used for treatment of intracranial aneurysms. Postradiation alopecia, commonly seen weeks after radiation for other diseases such as brain tumors, is rarely reported after neuroendovascular procedures for benign lesions because of their delayed manifestations. Although the morbidity and mortality is less compared with surgery, adverse effects related to radiation are probably understated, underreported, and/or often attributed to prolonged bed rest, heparinization, or poor nutrition.
