Inertial particles advected by a background flow can show complex structures. We consider inertial particles in a 2D Taylor-Green (TG) flow and characterize particle dynamics as a function of the particle's Stokes number using dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) method from particle image velocimetry (PIV) like-data. We observe the formation of caustic structures and analyze them using DMD to (a) determine the Stokes number of the particles, and (b) estimate the particle Stokes number composition.

We develop an adversarial-reinforcement learning scheme for microswimmers in statistically homogeneous and isotropic turbulent fluid flows, in both two and three dimensions. We show that this scheme allows microswimmers to find nontrivial paths, which enable them to reach a target on average in less time than a naïve microswimmer, which tries, at any instant of time and at a given position in space, to swim in the direction of the target. We use pseudospectral direct numerical simulations of the two- and three-dimensional (incompressible) Navier-Stokes equations to obtain the turbulent flows.

Minimization of the low-temperature elastic free-energy functional of orientationlly ordered membranes involves independent variation of the membrane-shape, while keeping the orientational order on it (its texture) fixed. We propose an operational, coordinate-independent method for implementing such a variation. Using the Nelson-Peliti formulation of elasticity that emphasizes the interplay between geometry, topology, and thermal fluctuations of orientationally ordered membranes, we minimize the elastic free energy to obtain equations governing their equilibrium shape, together with associated free boundary conditions.

The Nelson-Peliti formulation of the elasticity theory of isolated fluid membranes with orientational order emphasizes the interplay between geometry, topology, and thermal fluctuations. Fluid layers of lamellar liquid crystals such as smectic-C, hexatic smectics, and smectic-C^{*} are endowed with in-plane orientational order. We extend the Nelson-Peliti formulation so as to bring these smectics within its ambit.

When an entangled interpenetrating collection of long flexible polymer chains dispersed in a suitable solvent is cooled to low enough temperatures, thin lamellar crystals form. Remarkably, these lamellae are sectored, with several growth sectors that have differing melting temperatures and growth kinetics, eluding so far an understanding of their origins. We present a theoretical model to explain this six-decade-old challenge by addressing the elasticity of fold surfaces of finite-sized lamella in the presence of disclination-type topological defects arising from anisotropic line tension.
