Nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infections have become increasingly important in ophthalmology, particularly with keratorefractive surgery. We report a case of scleral buckle associated NTM scleritis occurring in a 69-year-old male after silicone sponge explant removal. Because there are no therapies for these patients, we are evaluating the possibility that electrical stimulation delivered to the subretinal space by a microphotodiode array (MPA) could replace, in some aspect, the function of diseased photoreceptors.
