Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a heterogeneous autoimmune disease characterized by severe organ damage and lacking curative treatment. While various immune cell types, especially dysfunctional B and T cells and neutrophils, have been related with disease pathogenesis, limited research has focused on the role of monocytes in SLE. Increased DNA extracellular traps, apoptosis and necrosis have been related to lupus pathogenesis.

Background: Early diagnosis and treatment of Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and Systemic sclerosis (SSc) present significant challenges for clinicians. Although various studies have observed changes in serum levels of selectins between healthy donors and patients with autoimmune diseases, including SLE and SSc, their potential as biomarkers has not been thoroughly explored. We aimed to investigate serum profiles of PSGL-1 (sPSGL-1), ADAM8 (sADAM8) and P-, E- and L-selectins (sP-, sE- and sL-selectins) in defined SLE and SSc patient cohorts to identify disease-associated molecular patterns.

Background: Prostate cancer (PC) is the second most frequent tumor in men worldwide; however, its etiology remains largely unknown, with the exception of age and family history. The wide variability in incidence/mortality across countries suggests a certain role for environmental exposures that has not yet been clarified.

Objective: To evaluate the association between risk of PC (by clinical profile) and residential proximity to pollutant industrial installations (by industrial groups, groups of carcinogens, and specific pollutants released), within the context of a Spanish population-based multicase-control study of incident cancer (MCC-Spain).

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the connection between SARS-CoV-2 viral load (viremia) and genetic variations (SNPs) linked to the severity of COVID-19 in a group of hospitalized patients at University Hospital La Princesa.
  • Out of 340 patients analyzed, only 37.1% had positive viremia, with specific SNPs (like rs2071746 and rs78958998) associated with a higher risk of viremia, while others (like rs11052877 and rs33980500) were linked to a lower risk.
  • The findings suggest that certain genetic variants contribute to differences in SARS-CoV-2 viremia among individuals, highlighting the

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focuses on the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccination in individuals with oncohematological diseases (OHD) who received hematopoietic stem cell transplants (HSCT), addressing significant morbidity and mortality rates prior to vaccination.
  • - It was found that these individuals maintained low but protective levels of neutralizing antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 after undergoing HSCT, indicating some persistent immune protection despite B-cell deficiencies.
  • - Results showed that although cellular immunity was impaired in those who had allogeneic HSCT, infections that occurred post-transplant were mild, reinforcing the necessity and safety of COVID-19 vaccination for this vulnerable group.

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease characterized by the generation of anti-DNA autoantibodies due to exposure of immune cells to excessive amounts of extracellular DNA. Lack of P-selectin in mice induces the development of a lupus-like syndrome and patients with cutaneous lupus have reduced P-selectin expression in skin vessels. Using flow cytometry we analyzed in healthy donors and patients the expression of P-selectin Glycoprotein Ligand-1 (PSGL-1) in circulating neutrophils and the implication of PSGL-1/P-selectin interaction in neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) generation.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated the immune response to SARS-CoV-2 variants in individuals who had recovered from COVID-19, focusing on two groups based on the time elapsed since infection (1-3 months vs. 4-12 months).
  • It found that recovered individuals had higher antibody levels compared to naïve participants after vaccination, especially after receiving their second dose.
  • Longer intervals between infection and vaccination (more than 3 months) significantly improved the effectiveness of the immune response against various strains of the virus, highlighting the importance of timing in vaccination strategies.

Air pollution is considered an ongoing major public health and environmental issue around the globe, affecting the most vulnerable, such as pregnant women and fetuses. The aim of this study is to estimate the health impact and economic value on birth outcomes, such as low birthweight (LBW), preterm birth (PTB), small for gestational age (SGA), attributable to a reduction of PM levels in Spain. Reduction based on four scenarios was implemented: fulfillment of WHO guidelines and EU limits, and an attributable reduction of 15% and 50% in annual PM levels.

The presence of neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) is a major correlate of protection for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. Thus, different in vitro pseudoviruses-based assays have been described to detect NAbs against SARS-CoV-2. However, the determination of NAbs against SARS-CoV-2 in people living with HIV (PLWH) through HIV-based pseudoparticles could be influenced by cross-neutralization activity or treatment, impeding accurate titration of NAbs.

Research identifies that families of children with medical complexities in the United States have diverse and complex needs. Despite research emphasizing that families demonstrate higher needs that are not being met, limited research focuses solely on mothers of children with medical complexities. Specifically, how mothers understand and identify themselves, understand and define their role in coordinating care, and how they view their own mental and physical health.

The humoral immune response developed after receiving the full vaccination schedule against COVID-19 is impaired in individuals who received anti-CD20 therapy 6-9 months before vaccination. However, there is little information about the cellular immune responses elicited in these individuals. In this study, we analyzed the humoral and cellular immune responses in 18 individuals with hematological disease who received the last dose of rituximab 13.

Background And Purpose: Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is the main cause of mortality in systemic sclerosis (SSc), and current therapies available are of low efficacy or high toxicity. Thus, the identification of innovative less toxic and high efficacy therapeutic approaches to ILD treatment is an urgent need. The interaction of P-selectin glycoprotein ligand-1 (PSGL-1) with P-selectin initiates leukocyte extravasation and deletion of the corresponding gene (Selplg) induces a SSc-like syndrome with high incidence of ILD in aged mice.

Non-human primates (NHP) are widely used for the pre-clinical assessment of antiretrovirals (ARVs) for HIV treatment and prevention. However, the utility of these models is questionable given the differences in ARV pharmacology between humans and macaques. Here, we report a model based on ARV exposure and the challenge of mucosal tissue explants to define pharmacological differences between NHPs and humans.

LGMDD2 is a rare form of muscular dystrophy characterized by one of the three heterozygous deletions described within the gene that result in the addition of a 15-amino acid tail in the C-terminus.TNPO3 is involved in the nuclear import of splicing factors and acts as a host cofactor for HIV-1 infection by mechanisms not yet deciphered. Further characterization of the crosstalk between HIV-1 infection and LGMDD2 disease may contribute to a better understanding of both the cellular alterations occurring in LGMDD2 patients and the role of TNPO3 in the HIV-1 cycle.

Individuals with oncohematological diseases (OHD) may develop an impaired immune response against vaccines due to the characteristics of the disease or to its treatment. Humoral response against SARS-CoV-2 has been described to be suboptimal in these patients, but the quality and efficiency of the cellular immune response has not been yet completely characterized. In this study, we analyzed the early humoral and cellular immune responses in individuals with different OHD after receiving one dose of an authorized vaccine against SARS-CoV-2.
