Iron incorporation in red blood cells of pediatric sickle cell anemia: a stable isotope pilot investigation.

Background/objectives: Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is marked by hypoxia, inflammation, and secondary iron overload (IO), which potentially modulate hepcidin, the pivotal hormone governing iron homeostasis. The aim was to evaluate the iron incorporation in red blood cells (RBC) in SCA pediatric patients, considering the presence or absence of IO.

Subjects/methods: SCA children (n = 12; SCA) ingested an oral stable iron isotope (Fe) and iron incorporation in RBC was measured after 14 days.

Iron absorption in adults with sickle cell anemia: a stable-isotope approach.

Purpose: Iron absorption in sickle cell anemia (SCA) remains unclear and studies in adults with SCA are scarce. The aim of this study was to evaluate the iron absorption SCA adults and its association with iron status and hepcidin concentration.

Methods: SCA patients (n = 13; SCA) and control participants (n = 10) ingested an oral stable iron isotope (Fe).

Amyloid precursor protein induces reactive astrogliosis.

We present and evidence demonstrating that Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP) acts as an essential instigator of reactive astrogliosis. Cell-specific overexpression of APP in cultured astrocytes led to remodelling of the intermediate filament network, enhancement of cytokine production and activation of cellular programs centred around the interferon (IFN) pathway, all signs of reactive astrogliosis. Conversely, APP deletion in cultured astrocytes abrogated remodelling of the intermediate filament network and blunted expression of IFN stimulated gene (ISG) products in response to lipopolysaccharide (LPS).

The Importance of Radiological Patterns and Small Airway Disease in Long-Term Follow-Up of Postacute COVID-19: A Preliminary Study.

Postacute COVID-19 has become a relevant public health problem, and radiological and pulmonary function tests are tools that help physicians in decision-making. The objectives of this study are to characterize the findings and patterns on a chest radiograph (CXR) and computed tomography (CT) that are most important in the postacute phase and to evaluate how these changes correlate with clinical data, spirometry, and impulse oscillometry (IOS). This was a retrospective study of 29 patients who underwent CXR, CT, spirometry, and IOS.

Neuroinflammation in Alzheimer's Disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease associated with human aging. Ten percent of individuals over 65 years have AD and its prevalence continues to rise with increasing age. There are currently no effective disease modifying treatments for AD, resulting in increasingly large socioeconomic and personal costs.

Micronutrient and anthropometric status indicators are associated with physical fitness in Colombian schoolchildren.

Poor physical fitness is associated with increased health-related risks in children. The association of nutritional status indicators and physical fitness in children residing in developing countries is not well characterised. We conducted a cross-sectional study among 1945 children of age 5-12 years in Bogotá, Colombia, to assess whether anthropometric and micronutrient status indicators were associated with performance in the shuttle run and standing long jump tests.

Short-term maternal psychological stress in the post-conception period in ewes affects fetal growth and gestation length.

Fetal development can be influenced by maternal environment in the peri-conceptional period. This study investigated the effect of maternal feed intake and psychological stress within the first 6 days after conception on embryo development and fetal growth. Superovulated ewes (n=40) were artificially inseminated with semen from one ram.

How healthy are clones and their progeny: 5 years of field experience.

There is considerable concern regarding the health of cloned cattle and their safety as a source of food. The objective was to summarize 5 years of commercial experience with cloning in three countries (United States, Argentina and Brazil). Overall, only 9% of transferred embryos resulted in calves; efficiency ranged from 0 to 45% (most were from 1 to 10%, but 24% of cell lines never produced live calves).

Transrectal Doppler sonography for evaluation of uterine blood flow throughout pregnancy in 13 cows.

Once weekly from 30 to 270 days of gestation in 13 cows, Doppler ultrasound scanning (triplex Doppler system) was done to assess blood-flow parameters of both median uterine arteries. Resistance, velocity and volume indices were measured. Resistance index values were negatively correlated to all other blood-flow parameters (P<0.
