The Impact of a Study Trip to Auschwitz: Place-based Learning for Bioethics Education and Professional Identity Formation.

There are increasing calls for coverage of medicine during the Holocaust in medical school curricula. This article describes outcomes from a Holocaust and medicine educational program featuring a study trip to Poland, which focused on physician complicity during the Holocaust, as well as moral courage in health professionals who demonstrated various forms of resistance in the ghettos and concentration camps. The trip included tours of key sites in Krakow, Oswiecim, and the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camps, as well as meeting with survivors, lectures, reflective writings, and discussions.

To succeed, an accreditation process for clinical ethics fellowship programs (CEFPs) would need support from CEFP directors. To assess CEFP directors' opinions, we surveyed all 36 CEFP directors in the United States and Canada, achieving a 100% response rate. We found that support for accreditation is strong, with 30.

Pediatric Assent in Clinical Practice: A Critical Scoping Review.

Background: This study assesses how pediatric assent is conceptualized and justified within the therapeutic context. Pediatric ethicists generally agree that children should participate in medical care decisions in developmentally appropriate ways. Much attention has been paid to pediatric assent for research participation, but ambiguities persist in how assent is conceptualized and operationalized in the therapeutic context where countervailing considerations such as the child's best interest and parental permission must also be weighed.

Comparative treatment of homeless persons with an infectious disease in the US emergency department setting: a retrospective approach.

Background: Research has long documented the increased emergency department usage by persons who are homeless compared with their housed counterparts, as well as an increased prevalence of infectious diseases. However, there is a gap in knowledge regarding the comparative treatment that persons who are homeless receive. This study seeks to describe this potential difference in treatment, including diagnostic services tested, procedures performed and medications prescribed.

Conscientious Objection to Aggressive Interventions for Patients in a Vegetative State.

Some physicians refuse to perform life-sustaining interventions, such as tracheostomy, on patients who are very likely to remain permanently unconscious. To explain their refusal, these clinicians often invoke the language of "futility", but this can be inaccurate and can mask problematic forms of clinical power. This paper explores whether such refusals should instead be framed as conscientious objections.

Base of the tongue hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma: Case report and literature review.

Hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma is an uncommon neoplasm arising in minor salivary glands. We present a rare case of hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma in the base of the tongue. We report a case of a 38-year-old female presented with a progressive history of hemoptysis and dysphagia over the course of 4 years.

Glomangiosarcoma-like Anaplastic Transformation in Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma: A Novel Form of Heterologous Differentiation and a Systematic Review of Heterologous Element Prevalence.

Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) demonstrates a wide variety of morphologies and is characteristically associated with a differentiated thyroid carcinoma component. Heterologous differentiation is a rare, potentially challenging phenomenon in ATC, mostly observed as osteosarcomatous or chondrosarcomatous differentiation. We now describe a novel 'glomangiosarcoma-like' differentiation, review our archival experience from two institutions (UPMC, CC), and perform a systematic review for the prevalence of heterologous elements in ATC.

It's Worth What You Can Sell It for: A Survey of Employment and Compensation Models for Clinical Ethicists.

This article reports results of a survey about employment and compensation models for clinical ethics consultants working in the United States and discusses the relevance of these results for the professionalization of clinical ethics. This project uses self-reported data from healthcare ethics consultants to estimate compensation across different employment models. The average full-time annualized salary of respondents with a clinical doctorate is $188,310.

Education Research: Changes in Medical Students' Knowledge and Attitudes Toward Clinical Death After Teaching the Philosophy of Death.

Background And Objectives: Varied meanings of death within medicine, bioethics, and society at large often produce disagreement and frustration between physicians and surrogate decision makers. We investigated whether teaching medical students about the philosophical aspects of death would change their attitude toward surrogate decision makers who assert nonstandard views of death.

Methods: An 80-minute lecture covering philosophical debates surrounding medico-legal standards of death was given to second-year medical students at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine during a neuroscience course.

Paradoxical experiences of healthcare workers during COVID-19: a qualitative analysis of anonymous, web-based, audio narratives.

Purpose: To gain a deeper understanding of healthcare workers experiences during COVID-19 using an anonymous, web-based, audio narrative platform.

Methods: Data were collected from healthcare workers in the midwestern United States using a web-enabled audio diary approach. Participant recordings were analysed using a narrative coding and conceptualization process derived from grounded theory coding techniques.

Deception, Pain, and Placebo: Applying the Brummett-Salter Deception Framework.

In this commentary, I explore the usefulness of the framework Abram Brummett and Erica K. Salter present in their article "Mapping the Moral Terrain of Clinical Deception." Deception cases are divisive because they nearly always evoke the metadilemma of clinical ethics: a clash between duties (in these cases, truth telling) and consequences (whatever good might come of the lie).

Expanding the prostate cancer cell line repertoire with ACRJ-PC28, an AR-negative neuroendocrine cell line derived from an African-Caribbean patient.

Prostate cell lines from diverse backgrounds are important to addressing disparities in prostate cancer (PCa) incidence and mortality rates among Black men. ACRJ-PC28 was developed from a transrectal needle biopsy and established via inactivation of the locus and simultaneous expression of human telomerase. Characterization assays included growth curve analysis, immunoblots, IHC, 3D cultures, immunofluorescence imaging, confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, WGS, and RNA-Seq.

Negative Impact of COVID-19 Associated Health System Shutdown on Patients Diagnosed With Colorectal Cancer: A Retrospective Study From a Large Tertiary Center in Ontario, Canada.

Background: In March 2020, a directive to halt all elective and non-urgent procedures was issued in Ontario, Canada because of COVID-19. The directive caused a temporary slowdown of screening programs including surveillance colonoscopies for colorectal cancer (CRC). Our goal was to determine if there was a difference in patient and tumour characteristics between CRC patients treated surgically prior to the COVID-19 directive compared to CRC patients treated after the slowdown.

The Epstein Barr virus (EBV) infects almost 95% of the population worldwide. While typically asymptomatic, EBV latent infection is associated with several malignancies of epithelial and lymphoid origin in immunocompromised individuals. In latently infected cells, the EBV genome persists as a chromatinized episome that expresses a limited set of viral genes in different patterns, referred to as latency types, which coincide with varying stages of infection and various malignancies.

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common biphasic type of salivary gland tumour to arise in adults. It is a biphasic tumour composed of both luminal (ductal) cells and abluminal (basal and myoepithelial) cells. Other biphasic salivary gland type tumours, both benign and malignant, can mimic PA, especially on small biopsies.
