Heterotopic pregnancy is the occurrence of simultaneous intrauterine and extrauterine pregnancies. Heterotopic pregnancy most commonly occurs during the first trimester of pregnancy in women who have significant risk factors including assisted reproductive therapy, prior ectopic pregnancy, and prior pelvic surgery or pelvic inflammatory disease. Although rare, heterotopic pregnancy must be recognized using ultrasound so as to provide appropriate treatment to the extrauterine pregnancy with the goal of preserving the intrauterine pregnancy.
