[Cord blood banks].

Acta Med Croatica

December 2007

Cord blood is an excellent source of stem cells which are universal for all other cells of the whole body. They have the ability to develop in any of the body cells, depending on stimulation by different growth factors. The ease of sampling, cryopreservation, and above all successful engraftment make placental blood a possible alternative for bone marrow donation.

Although recombinant human bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are used locally for treating bone defects in humans, their systemic effect on bone augmentation has not been explored. We have previously demonstrated that demineralized bone (DB) from ovariectomized (OVX) rats cannot induce bone formation when implanted ectopically at the subcutaneous site. Here we showed in vitro that 17beta-estradiol (E2) specifically induced expression of Bmp6 mRNA in MC3T3-E1 preosteoblastic cells and that bone extracts from OVX rats lack BMPs.

This study aimed at identifying a calcium compound which could serve as an effective and safe dietary supplement in suckling rats over the period of intense growth and development. The main objective was to assess the effect of additional calcium intake on skeletal calcium in suckling pups. Suckling Wistar rats were fed using a pipettor with one of the following calcium salts from day 6 to 14 after the birth: gluconate, hydrogenphosphate, carbonate (each suspended in cow's milk), or chloride (in demineralized water).
