Hydroxyurea (hydroxycarbamide, HU) arrests cells in the S-phase by inhibiting ribonucleotide reductase and DNA synthesis, significantly contributing to the release of nitric oxide (NO). We investigated the involvement of inducible NO synthase (NOS2) in the cytostatic effect of HU using in vitro shRNA-induced knockdown of the NOS2 transcript (NOS2) or a specific NOS2 inhibitor (1400W) in human erythroleukemic HEL92.1.

Compounds from the plant world that possess antioxidant abilities are of special importance for the food and pharmaceutical industry. Coumarins are a large, widely distributed group of natural compounds, usually found in plants, often with good antioxidant capacity. The coumarin-hydroxybenzohydrazide derivatives were synthesized using a green, one-pot protocol.

Free radical scavenging and inhibitory potency against cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) by two abundant colon metabolites of polyphenols, i.e., 3-hydroxyphenylacetic acid (3-HPAA) and 4-hydroxyphenylpropionic acid (4-HPPA) were theoretically studied.

This work was focused on in vitro evaluation of anti-biofilm and anti-quorum sensing effects of four selected flavonoid compounds /(+)-catechin, caffeic acid, quercetin and morin/ using the strain Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1. At a concentration of 0.5 MIC quercetin was the only compound found to potently reduce both P.

The M05-2X/6-311++G(d,p) and B3LYP-D2/6-311++G(d,p) models are used to evaluate scavenging potency of gallic acid. The hydrogen atom transfer (HAT), sequential proton loss electron transfer (SPLET), and single electron transfer followed by proton transfer (SET-PT) mechanisms of gallic acid with some radicals ((•)OO(-), (•)OH, and CH3OO(•)) were investigated using the corresponding thermodynamic quantities: bond dissociation enthalpy (BDE), ionization potential (IP), and proton affinity (PA). Namely, the ΔHBDE, ΔHIP, and ΔHPA values of the corresponding reactions in some solvents (water, DMSO, pentylethanoate, and benzene) are investigated using an implicit solvation model (SMD).

The present paper reports on spectroscopic investigation of copigmentation effect of sinapic acid on the malvin molecule. A reaction of copigmentation was investigated by the use of UV-Vis absorption spectra in the whole range of acidic and moderately acidic buffered aqueous solutions (pH range 1.0-6.

The urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) and its inhibitors type 1 (PAI-1) and type 2 (PAI-2) are considered to have a key role in the process of invasion and metastasis. We investigated the differences in uPA, PAI-1 and PAI-2 concentrations in primary cutaneous melanoma and normal skin and correlations with well-established melanoma prognostic factors. The study was performed on 43 patients (19 men, 24 women; mean age 57 years) with histologically confirmed primary melanomas <1.
