The title compound, C(32)H(43)NO(4) x CH(4)O x H(2)O, has a nearly planar cyano-enone A ring in an otherwise normal oleanane triterpenoid. Rings A, B and C are non-chairs, but rings D and E adopt essentially cyclohexane chair conformations. The structure clearly establishes the C-D-E ring stereochemistry as trans-syn-cis, as predicted from a nuclear Overhauser effect (NOE) NMR measurement.

A tandem chain extension-aldol reaction was developed in which beta-keto esters are transformed to alpha-substituted-gamma-keto esters in an efficient zinc-mediated, one-pot reaction. The diastereoselectivity of the reaction ranged from good to excellent with syn stereochemistry observed for beta-keto ester and amide substrates and anti-stereochemistry observed for a beta-keto imide. [reaction: see text]

Research on violence against women has developed exponentially over the past 20 years, however, there are still many areas in which knowledge is scarce. In particular, there is very little empirical information regarding the cessation and persistence of intimate violence against women. There is even less research that looks at racial and ethnic differences in patterns of violence.

Research using primarily hospital-based samples has suggested that pregnancy may put women at increased risk for wife assault, however, this research is largely limited by the lack of a comparison group of women who are not pregnant, and the failure to consider racial or ethnic differences in risk for violent victimization. The present study uses data from the 1992 National Alcohol and Family Violence Survey, a national probability sample of 1,970 individuals, to examine the prevalence, severity, and onset of wife assaults associated with pregnancy among Anglo and Hispanic families. The results indicated that pregnancy was associated with minor assaults among Hispanic women and severe assaults among Anglo women.

In the present redetermination of the complex cis-tetracarbonylbis(tricyclohexylphosphine)molybdenum(0), (I), [Mo(C(18)H(33)P)(2)(CO)(4)] or cis-eta(1)-[P(C(6)H(11))(3)](2)Mo(CO)(4), the Mo atom has a distorted octahedral geometry with a large P-Mo-P angle of 104.8 (1) degrees. A strong trans influence on the carbonyls in (I) is seen in a shortening of the Mo-C and a lengthening of the C-O distances opposite the phosphines compared with those that are cis.

Objective: This study examines the associations among characteristics of child sexual abuse. childhood physical abuse, lack of parental care, and heavy drinking in a relatively young, urban population of African-American women all of whom have documented histories of child sexual abuse.

Methodology: The sample consists of 113 African American child victims who were brought to a city hospital emergency room for treatment and collection of forensic evidence in the 1970s and re-interviewed as adults in the 1990s.

Data from a national survey were used to investigate the help-seeking efforts of Latinas (Mexican, Mexican American, Puerto Rican) and Anglo American women who experienced battering by intimate partners. The findings revealed that battered Latinas were significantly younger, less educated, and more impoverished than Anglo women. Additionally, Latinas more often categorized their marriages as male dominated and their husbands as heavy drinkers.

A 4-year systematic survey for the presence of soybean cyst nematode Heterodera glycines in Ohio soybean fields was initiated in 1992. A total of 667 soybean fields in 63 counties was sampled. Heterodera glycines was present in 91 fields in 40 counties based on soil samples collected, and in one field in each of three additional counties based on soil samples submitted to the Plant and Pest Diagnostic Clinic or through a preliminary survey conducted in 1991.

The foundations for a computer program allowing to monitor "on line" physiological data to clinically evaluate ventilatory control were set up. The new equipment demonstrates important innovations--lowered flow resistance, and decreased dead space, modernization of the blocking steering the computer valve. The new program allowed to decrease the time for analysis from couple of minutes to seconds.

It is not clear whether traditional cultural ideology influences wife assaults in Hispanic-American families, or if culture is confounded with the stresses of poverty, unemployment, and immigration status. Our 1992 study of 1,970 families, including a national oversample of Hispanic families, examines the incidence of marital violence in the three major Hispanic-American subgroups and in Anglo-American families, and considers how sociocultural status and attitudes towards violence affect wife assaults differentially. The findings show that Hispanic Americans, as a whole, do not differ significantly from Anglo Americans in their odds of wife assaults when norms regarding violence approval, age, and economic stressors are held constant.

Sphygmomanometer--S is the microcomputer device measuring blood pressure (BP) by the noninvasive sphygmooscillographic method following standard algorithm. When compared sphygmomanometer--S with auscultatory method, this device overestimated systolic BP by 7 mm Hg, and underestimated diastolic BP by 9 mm Hg on the average. In other words, sphygmomanometer--S overestimated systolic pressure and lowers diastolic pressure in relation to auscultatory method in the same ratio and value, as the direct method in relation to the auscultatory method.

Multiresidue digestion-extraction procedures for the determination of chlorinated dioxins and furans in a wide variety of products are presented. Procedure selection is dependent upon the residue(s) of interest, and on the fat content of the product. Additional cleanup is accomplished using column chromatography and a Florisil trap.
