Low-load and high-load resistance exercise completed to volitional fatigue induce increases in post-exercise metabolic responses with more prolonged responses with the low-load protocol. J Strength Cond Res 38(8): 1386-1393, 2024-Comparisons of high-load with low-load resistance training (RT) exercise have demonstrated no differences in postexercise metabolism when volume is matched.

Purpose: To compare the effects of low-load and high-load RT exercise completed to volitional fatigue on appetite-regulation.
Methods: 11 resistance-trained males (24 ± 2 y) completed 3 sessions in a crossover experimental design: 1) control (CTRL); 2) RT exercise at 30% 1-repetition maximum (RM); and 3) RT exercise at 90% 1-RM.
Introduction: High-intensity interval training (HIIT) and sprint interval training (SIT) consistently elevate post-exercise metabolism compared to moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) in young adults (18-25 years), however few studies have investigated this in middle-aged adults.
Purpose: To assess the effect of exercise intensity on post-exercise metabolism following submaximal, near-maximal, and supramaximal exercise protocols in middle-aged adults.
Methods: 12 participants (8 females; age: 44 ± 10 years; O: 35.
Exercise in young adults (18-25 yr) suppresses appetite in a dose-response relationship with exercise intensity. Although several mechanisms have been proposed to explain this response, lactate is the most well established. To date, no study has investigated this specifically in middle-aged adults where the appetite response to a meal is different.

Although previous work has found no effect of exercise intensity on PEH, no study has compared submaximal, near maximal, and supramaximal intensities, specifically in middle-age adults where blood pressure (BP) management strategies may be of greater importance.
Purpose: This study examined the effects of MICT, HIIT, and SIT exercises on PEH in the immediate (≤2 h) and 24 h after exercise specifically in middle-age adults.
Background: Respiratory therapists (RTs) are care providers in highly stressful work environments with limited time and resources for self-care. Mindfulness-based interventions teach non-reactive awareness to the present situation or the ability to respond versus react in the moment, to shift away from a physical and emotional stress response.
Methods: Mindfulness-based group learning was offered during 2 regularly scheduled RT staff meetings for ∼30 min each session.
Extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer (EMMPRIN), known for its ability to induce matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) expression, was proposed to play a role in the adverse cardiac extracellular matrix remodeling. After observing an age-associated increase in cardiac EMMPRIN expression in both mice and rats, the role and mechanism of action of EMMPRIN was investigated in the myocardial age-associated changes using 3, 12 and 24 month old EMMPRIN knock-out (KO) vs. wild-type (WT) mice, by cardiac echocardiography, Western blots, immunohistochemistry, ELISA and histology.

Methods: We utilized published and unpublished data to model consumer response to point-of-purchase calorie postings at large chain restaurants in Los Angeles County. We conducted sensitivity analyses to account for uncertainty in consumer response and in the total annual revenue, market share, and average meal price of large chain restaurants in the county.
Peptide analogues of Tendamistat which include the most essential residues linked by novel omega-amino acids (X,Y,Z: H2N-(CH2)n-CO(2)H, where n=2-10) were designed, synthesized (Ac-Tyr(15)-X-Trp(18)-Arg(19)-Tyr(20)-Y-Thr(55)-Z-Asp(58)-Gly(59)-Tyr(60)-Ile(61)-Gly(62)-NH2), and analyzed for alpha-amylase inhibitory activity. Native dipeptide spacers sometimes were left intact at X and Z. Analogues demonstrated competitive inhibition with K(i) values ranging from 23 to 767 microM.

The use of AS-1 RBCs is concerning in neonates because of high exposure to dextrose, adenine and mannitol. We conducted this study to evaluate the safety and efficacy of AS-1 RBC use in neonates.

Historically, hospital administrators have viewed all laboratory sections as cost centers. The major expenses in the transfusion service are those associated with labor and blood products. However, few administrators take the time to look past this cost to see the impact of an active transfusion medicine section in other areas of the hospital.

Since blood for multiple transfusions on a given day is typically obtained from one fresh RBC unit, each multiply transfused neonate is exposed to many donors increasing the risk of transfusion transmitted disease. We hypothesized that the number of donor exposures per infant would decrease by instituting DDTP and that more infants will be exposed to only a single donor.

With maximum coverage of the edentulous ridges, the semiflexible flange minimizes food entrapment and improves the retention and stability of the RPD. The procedure can be accomplished during the initial processing of the RPD or when relining the prosthesis.

The use of Molloplast-B within the abutments of mandibular overdentures is an easy and inexpensive method for increasing retention and stability of dentures. The use of a retentive area prepared in natural tooth structure increases retentive capabilities for the overdenture patient. Unlike some silicone denture liners, Molloplast-B has shown an inhibitory effect to the growth of Candida albicans.
