Background: Literature suggests that unhealthy body mass index is a risk factor for adverse clinical outcomes.

Objectives: To study the association between unhealthy body mass index and morbidity and mortality after trauma using the 2016 American College of Surgeons Trauma Quality Improvement Program database.

Methods: A retrospective review was conducted comparing the normal weight control group to the underweight, overweight, obese, severely obese, and morbidly obese groups for differences in demographic factors, injury severity score, comorbidities, length of stay, and complications.

Purpose: Femur fractures are the result of high energy injury and are associated with life-threatening complications. Therefore, we studied how body mass index (BMI) contributes to complications after femoral fractures.

Patients with equestrian injuries were identified in the trauma registry from 2004 to 2007. We a priori divided patients into three groups: 0 to 18 years, 19 to 49 years, and 50 years old or older. There were 284 patients identified with equestrian-related trauma.

Background: Diagnosing blunt cardiac injury (BCI) can be difficult. Many patients with mechanism for BCI are admitted to the critical care setting based on associated injuries; however, debate surrounds those patients who are hemodynamically stable and do not otherwise require a higher level of care. To allow safe discharge home or admission to a nonmonitored setting, BCI should be definitively ruled out in those at risk.

Background: Approximately 600,000 ski- and snowboarding-related injuries occur in North America each year, with head injuries accounting for up to 20% of all injuries. Currently, there are no major institutional recommendations regarding helmet use for skiers and snowboaders in the United States, in part owing to previous conflicting evidence regarding their efficacy. The objective of this review was to evaluate existing evidence on the efficacy of safety helmets during skiing and snowboarding, particularly in regard to head injuries, neck and cervical spine injuries, and risk compensation behaviors.

Background: Hemorrhage from pelvic fracture is common in victims of blunt traumatic injury. In 2001, the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST) published practice management guidelines for the management of hemorrhage in pelvic trauma. Our American College of Surgeons Level I trauma center uses physiological data and injury patterns to identify fall patients at risk. We hypothesized that height of fall and patient age impacted injury severity and analyzed if they were significant predictors of the need for trauma team activation. Charts were reviewed from July 1, 2004, to June 30, 2007, for age; sex; Injury Severity Score (ISS); height of fall and admission to the intensive care unit, operating room, stepdown unit, floor; or death.

Computed tomography of the chest, abdomen, and pelvis (CTCAP) has become the mainstay of diagnosis in stable blunt trauma patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether standard CTCAP has adequate sensitivity to identify fractures of the scapula, clavicle, and humeral head to replace routine radiographs of the shoulder. Identifying spinal injuries in trauma patients with altered mental status can be difficult. CT scanning and clinical examination are the basis of our spinal clearance, but screening "trauma protocol" spinal MRI is used to exclude occult injuries. We sought to evaluate the sensitivity of CT scanning for spinal injuries compared with our MRI protocol.
