Multifarious diagnostic possibilities of the S100 protein family: predominantly in pediatrics and neonatology.

Background: Numerous articles related to S100 proteins have been recently published. This review aims to introduce this large protein family and its importance in the diagnostics of many pathological conditions in children and adults.

Data Sources: Based on original publications found in database systems, we summarize the current knowledge about the S100 protein group and highlight the most important proteins with focus on pediatric use.

Sicily statement on classification and development of evidence-based practice learning assessment tools.

Background: Teaching the steps of evidence-based practice (EBP) has become standard curriculum for health professions at both student and professional levels. Determining the best methods for evaluating EBP learning is hampered by a dearth of valid and practical assessment tools and by the absence of guidelines for classifying the purpose of those that exist. Conceived and developed by delegates of the Fifth International Conference of Evidence-Based Health Care Teachers and Developers, the aim of this statement is to provide guidance for purposeful classification and development of tools to assess EBP learning.

Integration of evidence-based practice in bedside teaching paediatrics supported by e-learning.

Background: Bedside teaching with evidence-based practice elements, supported by e-learning activities, can play an important role in modern medical education. Teachers have to incorporate evidence from the medical literature to increase student motivation and interactivity.

Materials And Methods: An integral part of the medical curricula at Palacky University Olomouc (Czech Republic) are real paediatric scenarios supplemented with a review of current literature to enhance evidence-based bedside teaching & learning.

Precursor T-lymphoblastic lymphoma as a secondary malignancy in a young patient after successful treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia.

Background: Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) is a relatively rare subtype of acute myeloid leukemia. It has become the best curable subtype of acute leukemias in adults due to the inclusion of all-trans-retinoic acid (ATRA) in the treatment. Despite the efficacy of ATRA, chemotherapy must be added in APL patients in order to maintain durable complete remission.

Web-based instruction and its impact on the learning activity of medical students: a review.

Background: The aim of this review was to summarise the experience on implementation of information technology to support the teaching and learning process in medicine. Particular attention was paid to web-based tutorials, their impact on increasing the effectiveness of medical instruction and motivation of students towards self-directed learning. Most of the studies selected for the purpose of the review comprised evaluation of the web-tutorials in view of practical implementation, strengths, weaknesses, and main preferences in comparison with traditional lecture-based education.

Computer literacy enhancement in the Teaching Hospital Olomouc. Part I: project management techniques. Short communication.

Information explosion and globalization make great demands on keeping pace with the new trends in the healthcare sector. The contemporary level of computer and information literacy among most health care professionals in the Teaching Hospital Olomouc (Czech Republic) is not satisfactory for efficient exploitation of modern information technology in diagnostics, therapy and nursing. The present contribution describes the application of two basic problem solving techniques (brainstorming, SWOT analysis) to develop a project aimed at information literacy enhancement.
