The effectiveness and safety of hemodialysis can be hindered by protein accumulation, mechanical instability of membranes and bacterial infection during the dialytic therapy. Herein, we show that cellulose acetate membranes modified with the low-fouling polymers (namely polyvinylpyrrolidone and polyethylene glycol), followed by the in situ reduction of different densities of silver oxide(I) nanoparticles, can effectively address these limitations. These improvements comprise the enhanced resistance to the protein fouling, improved antimicrobial capabilities against S.

Cadmium-free and NIR fluorescent QDs are promising candidates for bio-application. Thus, we present the synthesis of ternary ZnCuInS/ZnS (ZCIS/ZnS) quantum dots (QDs) where the molar variation of Cu/Zn of the precursors was used to tune the optical and structural properties. QDs with Cu/Zn molar ratio of 2/1 passivated with ZnS exhibited the best optical properties.

Cellulose acetate membranes exhibit a potential to be applied in hemodialysis. However, their performance is limited by membrane fouling and a lack of antibacterial properties. In this research, copper oxide (I) nanoparticles were fabricated in situ into a cellulose acetate matrix in the presence of polyvinylpyrrolidone (pore-forming agent) and sulfobetaine (stabilising agent) to reduce the leakage of copper ions from nano-enhanced membranes.

Due to the health risks associated with the use of Gd-chelates and the promising effects of using nanoparticles as contrast agents (CAs) for MRI, Mn-based nanoparticles are considered a highly competitive alternative. The use of hybrid constructs with paramagnetic functionality of Mn-based nanoparticles is an effective approach, in particular, the use of biocompatible lipid liquid crystalline nanoparticles (LLCNPs) as a carrier of MnO nanoparticles. LLCNPs possess a unique internal structure ensuring a payload of different polarity MnO nanoparticles.

This study is devoted to the evaluation of the influence of phosphate dopants on the reactivity of NbO-based nanomaterials in the combined catalytic activation of HO and the elimination of methylene blue (MB) from an aqueous solution via adsorption and chemical degradation. For this purpose, several niobia-based catalysts doped with various amounts of phosphate were prepared by a facile hydrothermal method and subsequent calcination. Phosphate doping was shown to strongly enhance the ability of NbO to activate HO, as well as to adsorb and degrade MB.

The model organism Dinoroseobacter shibae and many other marine (, ) are characterized by a multipartite genome organization. Here, we show that the original isolate (Dshi-6) contained six extrachromosomal replicons (ECRs), whereas the strain deposited at the DSMZ (Dshi-5) lacked a 102-kb plasmid. To determine the role of the sixth plasmid, we investigated the genomic and physiological differences between the two strains.

Noninvasive, continuous glucose detection can provide some insights into daily fluctuations in blood glucose levels, which can help us balance diet, exercise, and medication. Since current commercially available glucose sensors can barely provide real-time glucose monitoring and usually imply different invasive sampling, there is an extraordinary need to develop new harmless methods for detecting glucose in non-invasive body fluids. Therefore, it is crucial to design (bio)sensors that can detect very low levels of glucose (down to tens of µM) normally found in sweat or tears.

The ability of Leptospirae to persist in environments and animal hosts but to cause clinically highly variable disease in humans has made leptospirosis the most common zoonotic disease. Considering the paucity of data on variation in complete genomes of human pathogenic Leptospirae, we have used a combination of Single Molecule Real-Time (SMRT) and Illumina sequencing to obtain complete genome sequences of six human clinical isolates from Malaysia. All six contained the larger (4.

The application of ionic liquids (ILs) has grown enormously, from their use as simple solvents, catalysts, media in separation science, or electrolytes to that as task-specific, tunable molecular machines with appropriate properties. A thorough understanding of these properties and structure-property relationships is needed to fully exploit their potential, open new directions in IL-based research and, finally, properly implement the appropriate applications. In this work, we investigated the structure-properties relationships of a series of alkyltriethylammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide [TEA-R][TFSI] ionic liquids in relation to their thermal behavior, structure organization, and self-diffusion coefficients in the bulk state using DSC, FT-IR, SAXS, and NMR diffusometry techniques.

Cyanobacteria represent one of the most important and diverse lineages of prokaryotes with an unparalleled morphological diversity ranging from unicellular cocci and characteristic colony-formers to multicellular filamentous strains with different cell types. Sequencing of more than 1200 available reference genomes was mainly driven by their ecological relevance (, ), toxicity () and the availability of axenic strains. In the current study three slowly growing non-axenic cyanobacteria with a distant phylogenetic positioning were selected for metagenome sequencing in order to (i) investigate their genomes and to (ii) uncover the diversity of associated heterotrophs.
