Bufotenine, an alkaloid that can be found in plant extracts and skin secretions of amphibians, is reported to have potential antiviral activity. The present study evaluated the antiviral activity of bufotenine against different genetic lineages of rabies virus (RABV, a single-stranded, negative-sense RNA virus), canine coronavirus (CCoV, a positive-sense RNA virus) and two double-stranded DNA viruses (two strains of herpes simplex virus type 1/HSV-1 [KOS and the acyclovir-resistant HSV-1 strain 29R] and canine adenovirus 2, CAV-2). The maximal non-toxic bufotenine concentrations in Vero and BHK-21 cells were determined by MTT assays.

The chemical composition and antiviral activity of aqueous extract from Baccharis anomala was studied by bioactivity-guided fractionation. Ethanol precipitation and fractionation by molecular permeation allowed the separation of the anti-herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) active fraction from aqueous extract (Fraction B). Natural Product Reagent A, FeCl and thin-layer chromatography indicated the presence of phenolic compounds in the aqueous extract.

The anti-Trichomonas vaginalis activity of Hypericum polyanthemum extract obtained by supercritical fluid extraction (50°C, 150bar) and the chemical compounds isolated and purified from this extract (benzopyrans HP1, HP2, HP3, and phloroglucinol derivative uliginosin B) were assessed. Hypericum connatum (Guttiferae) is used in southern Brazil in the treatment of lesions in the mouth, often related to acute herpetic gingivo-stomatitis. The chemical investigation of the plant revealed the presence of phloroglucinol derivatives and flavonoids. From the n-hexane extract of the aerial parts a phloroglucinol derivative, hyperbrasilol B, was isolated, while the methanolic extract afforded four flavonoids: amentoflavone, hyperoside, guaijaverine and luteoforol.
