Background: Impaired fibrinolysis is found in impaired glucose tolerance and type 2 diabetes, associated with components of the metabolic syndrome. There are no data concerning fibrinolysis in subjects with normal glucose tolerance that convert to diabetes.
Methods: We studied the activities of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) and the levels of tPA antigen (a marker of endothelial dysfunction) in 551 subjects with normal glucose tolerance in 1990 in relation to incident diabetes during nine years of follow-up.
Aim: The authors present an analysis of time trends in blood pressure, hypertension, and lipids in the adult population of Northern Sweden over the period 1986-99.
Method: Four population surveys were undertaken with new and independent cohorts, 25-64 years old.
Results: Small changes in blood pressure were observed during the study period with increased systolic blood pressure in men and decreased diastolic blood pressure in women.
The purpose of this paper is, first, to describe the organization, sampling procedures, availability of samples/database, ethical considerations, and quality control program of the Northern Sweden Health and Disease Study Cohort. Secondly, some examples are given of studies on cardiovascular disease and diabetes with a focus on the biomarker programme. The cohort has been positioned as a national and international resource for scientific research.

Fluorescent and luminescent marker and reporter genes provide easily detectable phenotypes to microbial cells and are therefore valuable tools for the study of microorganisms in the environment. Although these tools are becoming widely adopted, there are still issues that remain to be solved, such as the dependence of the reporter output on the physiological status of the cell. Eventually it might be the use of marker and reporter genes themselves that will contribute towards better understanding of the physiological status of specific microbial populations in nature.

Background: This study focused on how cognitive ability, personality traits, self-rated psychiatric symptoms, and social functioning were related to the way in which patients with psychosis perceived supportive aspects of the ward atmosphere.
Methods: Patients at a psychiatric rehabilitation unit (PRU) in southern Sweden completed a ward atmosphere questionnaire (COPES), rated their psychiatric symptoms (SCL-90), self-image (SASB), and were tested on cognitive functioning (WAIS-R) and global social functioning (GAF). They were diagnosed according to ICD-10.
Background: It has been proposed that the mechanism of action of the new risk factors for myocardial infarction and stroke, von Willebrand factor (vWF), tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) and tissue plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) could possibly be mediated via a primary effect on atherogenesis but there is little data to substantiate this.
Design: A prospective single-centre cohort study of progression of atherosclerosis.
Methods: Carotid plaque area was quantitated by two-dimensional (2D) ultrasound in 258 subjects at entry and after 1 and 2 years.
