Background: Because the occurrence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) might contribute to childhood cancer survivor's excess risk of cardiovascular disease, the authors assessed the prevalence and determinants of MetS in the Dutch Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (DCCSS-LATER2) cohort.

Methods: In total, 2338 adult childhood cancer survivors (CCS) were cross-sectionally assessed for the prevalence of MetS, using the Lifelines cohort (N = 132,226 adults without a history of cancer) as references. The prevalence of MetS was clinically assessed using existing classifications, as well as an alternative method using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry fat% instead of waist circumference to define abdominal adiposity.

Complex lipids, essential components in biological processes, exhibit conserved age-related changes that alter membrane properties and cellular functions and are implicated as biomarkers and contributors to longevity and age-related diseases. While physical activity alleviates age-related comorbidities and physical impairments, comprehensive exploration of the underlying biological mechanisms, particularly at the level of complex lipids, remains limited. However, clinical studies suggest that physical activity may counteract these age-related lipidomic changes, presenting a promising avenue for intervention.

All birds possess a unique venous architecture surrounding the kidneys known as the renal portal system. In veterinary medicine, this system is well known for causing a first-pass effect when medication is administered parenterally via the leg veins, that is venous blood from the leg is filtered before entering general circulation, thus possibly compromising adequate dosage. Additionally, bilateral valves are present in these veins, and it has been hypothesized that they play a crucial role in regulating flow through the kidneys to protect them against increases in blood pressure.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) survivors are at risk for developing subsequent neoplasms, but there is limited information on long-term risks and risk factors for both subsequent malignant neoplasms (SMNs) and subsequent non-malignant neoplasms (SNMNs). We analyzed long-term risk and risk factors for SMNs and SNMNs among 3291 5-year ALL survivors from the Dutch Childhood Cancer Survivor Study-LATER cohort (1963-2014). We calculated standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) and cumulative incidences and used multivariable Cox proportional hazard regression analyses for analyzing risk factors.

Article Synopsis
  • In out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) cases without ST-elevation, researchers investigated the usefulness of troponin-T (cTnT) levels in predicting the risk of acute coronary syndrome and patient survival.
  • The study analyzed data from 352 patients, revealing that higher cTnT values were independent predictors for 90-day mortality and the presence of acute unstable lesions and thrombotic occlusions.
  • However, cTnT levels did not show a significant correlation with left ventricular function, highlighting its role primarily in assessing mortality risk and acute coronary issues in these patients.

Background And Purpose: Compared to intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT), proton arc therapy (PAT) is expected to improve dose conformality, delivery efficiency, and provide a more favorable LET distribution. Alternatively, the low-dose bath is potentially spread over larger volumes, which could impact the likelihood of developing a radiation-induced, secondary cancer (SC). The goal of this study was to evaluate this risk in several anatomical sites using newly developed commercial tools.

Prompt gamma (PG) radiation generated from nuclear reactions between protons and tissue nuclei can be employed for range verification in proton therapy. A typical clinical workflow for PG range verification compares the detected PG profile with a predicted one. Recently, a novel analytical PG prediction algorithm based on the so-called filtering formalism has been proposed and implemented in a research version of RayStation (RaySearch Laboratories AB), which is a widely adopted treatment planning system.

Background: Proton arc therapy (PAT) has emerged as a promising approach for improving dose distribution, but also enabling simpler and faster treatment delivery in comparison to conventional proton treatments. However, the delivery speed achievable in proton arc relies on dedicated algorithms, which currently do not generate plans with a clear speed-up and sometimes even result in increased delivery time.

Purpose: This study aims to address the challenge of minimizing delivery time through a hybrid method combining a fast geometry-based energy layer (EL) pre-selection with a dose-based EL filtering, and comparing its performance to a baseline approach without filtering.
