A novel donor-bridge-acceptor system has been synthesized by covalently linking a p-phenylene vinylene oligomer (OPV) and a perylene diimid (PERY) at opposite ends of a m-phenylene ethynylene oligomer (FOLD) of twelve phenyl rings, containing nonpolar (S)-3,7-dimethyl-1-octanoxy side chains. For comparison, model compounds have been prepared in which either the donor or acceptor is absent. In chloroform, the oligomeric bridge is in a random coil conformation.

This study was the first to explore the potential role of the myostatin (GDF8) pathway in relation to muscle strength and estimated muscle cross-sectional area in humans using linkage analysis with a candidate gene approach. In young male sibs (n = 329) 11 polymorphic markers in or near 10 candidate genes from the myostatin pathway were genotyped. Muscle mass was estimated by anthropometric measurements, and maximal knee strength was evaluated using isokinetic dynamometers (Cybex NORM).

The oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) system consists of five multiprotein complexes and two mobile electron carriers embedded in the lipid bilayer of the mitochondrial inner membrane. With the exception of complex II and the mobile carriers, the other parts of the OXPHOS system are under dual genetic control. Due to this bigenomic control, the inheritance of OXPHOS system defects is either maternal, in the case of mitochondrial DNA mutations, autosomal or X-linked, in the case of nuclear gene defects.

Reducing new HIV infections in the United States requires allocating public resources to interventions that will have the greatest impact on reducing the number of new infections. We report on the organizational experience of a federal agency's efforts to align its HIV prevention resources to reflect the specific priorities of a five-year strategic plan that has as its goal a fifty percent reduction in the number of annual HIV infections nationwide. Structural and other impediments encountered during the alignment process, and the steps taken to minimize their impact are described, adding to the empirical data base of strategic planning experiences in the public sector.

Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium have evolved genetic systems, such as the soxR/S and marA regulons, to detoxify reactive oxygen species, like superoxide, which are formed as by-products of metabolism. Superoxide also serves as a microbicidal effector mechanism of the host's phagocytes. We present a case report of a pseudoaneurysm of the popliteal artery after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction using a bicortical tibial screw fixation 12 days after surgery. Surgical exploration and repair of an intimal lesion of the popliteal artery was performed. At 4-months' follow-up, there was still sensory loss in areas of the saphenous, medial plantar, calcaneal, and superficial peroneal nerves.

Risk behavior information is essential for allocating resources and developing effective HIV prevention strategies. Over time, transmission risk information on HIV/AIDS cases has been less likely to be reported to the national surveillance system. The photophysical properties of a supramolecular donor-acceptor dyad consisting of an oligo(p-phenylenevinylene) unit and a perylene-diimide unit are described. The dyad is created by functionalising the two chromophores with quadruple hydrogen bonding 2-ureido-4[1H]-pyrimidinone units, which provide a high association constant (K approximately 10(8) M-1 in toluene). This feature enabled us to study the time-resolved photoinduced singlet-energy transfer reaction between the two chromophores in dilute solution with transient pump-probe spectroscopy.

Less sensitive (LS) HIV-1 enzyme immunoassays (EIAs) have significantly improved the quantity and quality of HIV surveillance data. The first LS-HIV-1 EIA, the Abbott 3A11-LS, provided reliable incidence data, but the assay required specialized equipment, and the lack of available reagents made testing difficult. The performance of the bioMérieux Vironostika-LS EIA (less sensitive enzyme immunoassay) was assessed to detect recent seroconversion among injecting drug users (IDUs) in Bangkok, Thailand who were infected with either HIV-1 subtypes B' or E (also known as circulating recombinant form CRF01_AE). To evaluate the Vironostika-LS EIA in non-B subtypes, we collected longitudinal specimens (n = 796) from 115 IDUs (subtype B' infection, n = 24; subtype E infection, n = 91). After testing HIV-positive specimens with the Vironostika-LS EIA, standardized optical densities (SODs) were calculated using median values to determine the window period, which is the time from seroconversion on a standard EIA to seroconversion on the Vironostika-LS EIA for a given SOD, for either subtype.

A Suzuki polycondensation reaction has been used to synthesize two copolymers consisting of alternating oligo(p-phenylene vinylene) (OPV) donor and perylene bisimide (PERY) acceptor chromophores. The copolymers differ by the length of the saturated spacer that connects the OPV and PERY units. With the end goal of incorporating the unique structural and physical properties of dendrimers into supramolecular assemblies, bis(m-phenylene)-32-crown-10-functionalized poly(propyleneimine) dendrimers of the first and third generations have been synthesized and their interaction with paraquat diol has been investigated.
