The individual effects of the cations Ca(2+), Mg(2+), Na(+), and H(+) on the chronic toxicity of Zn to the waterflea Daphnia magna were investigated in different series of univariate experiments, resulting in the development of a chronic Zn biotic ligand model (BLM) for this species. Using the mathematical approach based on a linear relationship between cation activity and metal activity at the EC(x) level, the following stability constants for binding of competing cations to the biotic ligand (BL) were derived: logK(CaBL) = 3.22, logK(MgBL) = 2.

The replication and repair of organellar genomes in the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum is poorly understood. We have assessed the properties of an open reading frame Pfprex (formerly known as pom1) and confirm that it specifies a multi-domain polypeptide with DNA primase, DNA helicase, DNA polymerase and 3'-5' exonuclease activities. The sequence of the primase/helicase domain is phylogenetically related to the T7-bacteriophage gene 4 product and mammalian mitochondrial helicase, Twinkle.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA large acclimation experiment was performed with Daphnia magna in which two different copper bioavailability (as Cu2+) groups (N and M) were used. In the N group the cupric ion activity increased with increasing dissolved copper-acclimation concentration, while in the M group the ion activity decreased with increasing dissolved copper concentration. The activity of copper carbonates and hydroxides was up to an order of magnitude lower than the cupric ion activity.

The method includes extraction of water samples using solid-phase extraction discs and detection by gas chromatography (GC) with tandem mass spectrometry (MS-MS) in electron-impact (EI) mode. The targeted estrogens included 17alpha- and 17beta-estradiol (aE2, bE2), estrone (E1), and 17alpha-ethinylestradiol (EE2), all known environmental endocrine disruptors.

The compounds tested included the second-generation non-nucleoside RTI (NNRTI) TMC-120 (R147681, dapivirine) and TMC-125 (R165335, travertine), as well as the reference nucleoside RTI AZT (zidovudine), the nucleotide RTI PMPA (tenofovir) and the NNRTI UC-781. The virus strains included the reference strain HIV-1Ba-L and six primary isolates, representative of the HIV-1 group M pandemic.

Furthermore, it is suggested that reactive oxygen species (ROS) may play a role in human cancer development. Polymorphic variations in NAD(P)H oxidase p22phox and paraoxonase 1 (PON1) enzyme activities may alter superoxide production or the rate of chemical metabolism, respectively, and this may influence the risk for CRC.

Community tolerance for a contaminant is thus a strong indicator for the presence of that contaminant at the level of adverse concentrations. Here we assessed PICT in 11 soils contaminated with zinc runoff from galvanised electricity pylons and 11 reference soils sampled at 10 m distance from these pylons.

This range was determined by combining physicochemical water characteristics of European surface waters with total Zn concentrations in these waters in such a way that they resulted in minimal and maximal free (i.

Undetected tumor-positive nodes of clinical importance are those that lead to axillary recurrence. This survey aims at clarifying the extent of this problem in current practice and literature.

The 48-h EC(50)s of field-collected organisms tested in reconstituted standard laboratory water ranged from 5.3 to 70.

Based on bioconcentration factors, active copper regulation was observed in algae up to 5 microg Cu L(-1) and in daphnids up to 35 mug Cu L(-1). Constant body copper concentrations (13+/-4 microg Cu g DW(-1)) were observed in algae exposed to 1 through 5 microg Cu L(-1) and in daphnids exposed to 1 through 12 microg Cu L(-1).

Olsen and Schober (Soc Indi Res 1993; 28: 173-193) may have provided a framework useful to conceptualize such discrepancies. They suggested that lack of concordance between objective circumstances (i.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA field study was conducted to validate concentrations of zinc in freshwater sediments that are tolerated by benthic macroinvertebrate communities and to determine whether a relationship exists with the acid volatile sulfide (AVS)-simultaneously extracted metal (SEM) model. In both the lake and riverine systems, one sediment type was high in AVS and one low in AVS, which resulted in zinc-spiked sediments that ranged from low to high SEM to AVS ratios. The colonization trays were sampled seasonally, ranging from 6 to 37 weeks of exposure, and were evaluated using several appropriate benthic indices.

In 114 of 136 consecutive patients clinically suspected of myocardial ischemia with an inconclusive diagnosis of myocardial ischemia, dobutamine CMR was performed and the CAC score was determined. The CAC score was obtained by 16-row multidetector compued tomography (MDCT) and was calculated according to the method of Agatston.

The aim of this research was to study the relative acute cladoceran community sensitivity in different aquatic systems. Current risk assessment procedures are based upon hypothetical communities and do not take into account variation in species composition and tolerance between aquatic communities.

As pH changes can significantly affect metal speciation and thus its bioavailability, it may be necessary to buffer the pH of the exposure medium. One class of buffers (Good's N-subtituted aminosulfonic acids) are increasingly being used in biological and chemical applications, including ecotoxicity testing.

Zinc is an essential element, and the current probability distributions may not adequately deal with this property. The threshold Pareto distribution provided the best fit to the chronic Zn toxicity data, resulting in a predicted-no-effect concentration (PNECadd) for dissolved Zn of 34.
