Molecular Order Induced Charge Transfer in a C-Topological Insulator Moiré Heterostructure.

We synthesized and spectroscopically investigated monolayer (ML) C on the topological insulator (TI) BiTe. This C/BiTe heterostructure is characterized by an excellent translational order in a novel (4 × 4) C superstructure on a (9 × 9) cell of BiTe. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) of C/BiTe reveals that ML C accepts electrons from the TI at room temperature, but no charge transfer occurs at low temperatures.

Here, we report a series of 1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2'-diol (BINOL) based catalysts in which the number of interlocked macrocycles is varied. Unsurprisingly, the macrocycles have a profound steric influence on the catalytic performance of these molecules.

Social and environmental predictors of gut microbiome age in wild baboons.

Mammalian gut microbiomes are highly dynamic communities that shape and are shaped by host aging, including age-related changes to host immunity, metabolism, and behavior. As such, gut microbial composition may provide valuable information on host biological age. Here we test this idea by creating a microbiome-based age predictor using 13,563 gut microbial profiles from 479 wild baboons collected over 14 years.

Background: Acute gastroenteritis is a highly contagious disease demanding effective public health and clinical care systems for prevention and early intervention to avoid outbreaks and symptom deterioration. Socioeconomic differences in health risk behaviours during pregnancy may be influenced by social relations. In this study, we aimed to investigate if social need fulfillment moderates the association between socioeconomic status (SES) and health risk behaviours (smoking and/or alcohol consumption) during pregnancy. We used baseline data from the Lifelines Cohort Study merged with data from the Lifelines Reproductive Origin of Adult Health and Disease (ROAHD) cohort.

Using non-invasive behavioral and physiological data to measure biological age in wild baboons.

Biological aging is near-ubiquitous in the animal kingdom, but its timing and pace vary between individuals and over lifespans. Prospective, individual-based studies of wild animals-especially non-human primates-help identify the social and environmental drivers of this variation by indicating the conditions and exposure windows that affect aging processes. However, measuring individual biological age in wild primates is challenging because several of the most promising methods require invasive sampling.

Modulation of Cellular Stemness for Enhanced Fat Grafting.

Low volumetric retention limits the utility of fat grafting. Although inclusion of stem cells and platelet-rich plasma have been proposed to enhance graft retention, accumulating evidence has failed to show a clear benefit. Here, we propose a strategy to pharmacologically enhance stemness of stem and progenitor cell populations in fat grafts to promote increased volume retention and tissue health.

The Association Between Unintended Pregnancy and Perinatal Outcomes in Low-Risk Pregnancies: A Retrospective Registry Study in the Netherlands.

Introduction: People with unintended pregnancies might be at increased risk of adverse perinatal outcomes due to structural factors, distress, or delayed prenatal care. Existing studies addressing this association yielded inconsistent findings. Using contemporary data from a large Dutch midwifery care registry, we investigated the association between unintended pregnancy ending in birth and neonatal outcomes, parental morbidity, and obstetric interventions.

[SGLT2 inhibitors, also in frail older adults?].

Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2 inhibitors) have gained prominence in the treatment of diabetes mellitus type 2, heart failure, and chronic kidney disease. However, concerns arise for frail older adults, given their underrepresentation in trials and heightened susceptibility to adverse drug events. This review summarizes the clinical effects of SGLT2 inhibitors in older adults with frailty.

Analysis of Major and Minor Pedicles in Flap Perfusion by Computational Fluid Dynamics.

Background: Type 2 muscle flaps are characterized by major and minor pedicles, such that the minor pedicle is unreliable, and the major pedicle is a requirement for the success of the flap. The role of the minor pedicle, beyond the decreased caliber and decreased vascular territory in comparison to the major pedicle, is poorly understood. We sought to model the fluid dynamics of a model flap containing a major and minor pedicle to understand differences between the pedicles and the implications on perfusion.

Induction of islet autoimmunity to defective ribosomal product of the insulin gene as neoantigen after anti-cancer immunotherapy leading to autoimmune diabetes.

Introduction: The autoimmune response in type 1 diabetes (T1D), in which the beta cells expressing aberrant or modified proteins are killed, resembles an effective antitumor response. Defective ribosomal protein products in tumors are targets of the anti-tumor immune response that is unleashed by immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) treatment in cancer patients. We recently described a defective ribosomal product of the insulin gene (INS-DRiP) that is expressed in stressed beta cells and targeted by diabetogenic T cells.

Choice of DNA extraction method affects stool microbiome recovery and subsequent phenotypic association analyses.

The lack of standardization in the methods of DNA extraction from fecal samples represents the major source of experimental variation in the microbiome research field. In this study, we aimed to compare the metagenomic profiles and microbiome-phenotype associations obtained by applying two commercially available DNA extraction kits: the AllPrep DNA/RNA Mini Kit (APK) and the QIAamp Fast DNA Stool Mini Kit (FSK). Using metagenomic sequencing data available from 745 paired fecal samples from two independent population cohorts, Lifelines-DEEP (LLD, n = 292) and the 500 Functional Genomics project (500FG, n = 453), we confirmed significant differences in DNA yield and the recovered microbial communities between protocols, with the APK method resulting in a higher DNA concentration and microbial diversity.

Only a few localised ice streams drain most of the ice from the Greenland Ice Sheet. Thus, understanding ice stream behaviour and its temporal variability is crucially important to predict future sea-level change. The interior trunk of the 700 km-long North-East Greenland Ice Stream (NEGIS) is remarkable due to the lack of any clear bedrock channel to explain its presence.
