Objectives: Herpes zoster (HZ), caused by varicella zoster virus reactivation, affects a significant portion of the population, leading to substantial morbidity. Vaccination is highly effective in preventing HZ, yet awareness and uptake remain low. This study assessed awareness and willingness to vaccinate against HZ in Poland following the introduction of a reimbursement policy.

Oxidative modifications of lipoproteins play a crucial role in the initiation of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVDs). Nowadays, the one effective strategy for the treatment of patients with hyperlipoproteinemia(a) is lipoprotein apheresis (LA), which has a pleiotropic effect on reducing the risk of ASCVDs. The significance of oxidative susceptibility of the LDL fraction in ASCVDs has been extensively studied.

Public support for new tobacco control measures in Poland: A cross-sectional survey 2024.

Introduction: This study assessed public support for new tobacco control measures in Poland, including a smoking ban on private balconies, regular tobacco tax increases, and a total ban on tobacco sales.

Methods: A nationwide cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2024 using a computer-assisted web interview (CAWI). The 1080 adults (aged 18-82 years) were interviewed, of which 53% were females.

Health care transition experiences of young adults with medical complexity.

Background: Transition from pediatric to adult healthcare and services is an important event in the life course of all youth, including youth living with medical complexity. Data from the National Survey of Children's Health indicates less than 20 % of youth receive health care transition services. The goal of our study was understanding the support, tools and resources that facilitate successful health care transition of young adults living with medical complexity.

Investigating the consequences of chronic short sleep for metabolism and survival of oxidative stress.

In previous work, we found that short sleep caused sensitivity to oxidative stress; here we set out to characterize the physiological state of a diverse group of chronically short-sleeping mutants during hyperoxia as an acute oxidative stress. Using RNA-sequencing analysis, we found that short-sleeping mutants had a normal transcriptional oxidative stress response relative to controls. In both short-sleeping mutants and controls, hyperoxia led to downregulation of glycolytic genes and upregulation of genes involved in fatty acid metabolism, reminiscent of metabolic shifts during sleep.

Synaptic-like coupling of macrophages to myofibers regulates muscle repair.

Peripheral injury responses essential for muscle repair and nociception require complex interactions of target tissues, immune cells and primary sensory neurons. Nociceptors and myofibers both react robustly to signals generated from circulating immune cells, which promote repair, growth, and regeneration of muscle while simultaneously modulating peripheral sensitization. Here, we found that macrophages form a synaptic-like contact with myofibers to hasten repair after acute incision injury and to facilitate regeneration after major muscle damage.

Improved functional status from people with disabilities discharged from day medical care homes from 2017-2023 in Poland.

This study aimed to assess changes in the functional status of 956 patients with disabilities covered by day care in Day Medical Care Homes in Poland between 2017 and 2023. Medical records (admission reports and discharge reports) of patients admitted to seven Day Medical Care Homes managed by the Medical and Diagnostic Centre (Poland) were analyzed. The functional status of the patients was assessed using the Barthel Index and the Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) tool.

Revisiting serotonin's role in spatial memory: A call for sensitive analytical approaches.

The serotonergic system is involved in various psychiatric and neurological conditions, with serotonergic drugs often used in treatment. These conditions frequently affect spatial memory, which can serve as a model of declarative memory due to well-known cellular components and advanced methods that track neural activity and behavior with high temporal resolution. However, most findings on serotonin's effects on spatial learning and memory come from studies lacking refined analytical techniques and modern approaches needed to uncover the underlying neuronal mechanisms.

Association Between Postpartum Depression Symptoms and Social Determinants of Health in Outpatient Pediatric Clinic.

Introduction: We aimed to (1) identify the prevalence of postpartum depression (PPD) symptoms using the Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (PHQ-2) and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), and (2) analyze the relationship between PPD symptoms and social determinants of health (SDoH).

Method: We obtained data from 1327 infant/mother dyads at 1 and 6-month well-child checks. We used Chi-square and T-tests to compare social determinants between PPD screening groups and logistical regression to construct predictive models for PPD.

Introduction: Nicotine pouches are a new type of nicotine-containing product that have been marketed in many countries worldwide, generating growing acceptance among consumers. The aim of this study was to assess factors associated with public awareness and use of nicotine pouches among adults in Poland.

Headache accounts for 1 - 3% of emergency department (ED) visits globally and is associated with elevated blood pressure (BP). It is unclear if anti-hypertensive therapy provides benefits. This retrospective study assessed effects of anti-hypertensive therapy in ED headache patients on rescue analgesic need, hospital admissions, and length of stay (LOS).

Changes in Hospital Admissions of Patients with COPD in Poland: A 14-Year Nationwide Analysis (2006-2019).

Poland is a country with a high burden of COPD and its risk factors. This population-wide and geospatial study on COPD in Poland, aimed to analyze changes in hospitalizations of patients with a diagnosis of COPD between 2006 and 2019 as well as to identify changes in the demographic characteristics of patients hospitalized with COPD. This is a retrospective analysis of hospital discharge records of patients with a diagnosis of COPD (ICD-10 code J44 and age 40 and over), hospitalized in Poland between 2006 and 2019.
