Article Synopsis
  • The study examined trends in cardiovascular events and cardiometabolic risk factors among individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D) from 2001 to 2019, using a large sample from the Swedish National Diabetes Register.
  • Results showed a significant decline in the incidence rates of acute myocardial infarction, coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, and heart failure among those with T2D over the years, although heart failure rates stabilized around 2013.
  • Key risk factors like glycated hemoglobin and body mass index were identified as major contributors to cardiovascular risks in T2D, with elevated risks persisting even for those individuals without additional risk factors.

Objective: To investigate trends, optimal levels for cardiometabolic risk factors, and multifactorial risk control in diabetic nephropathy and end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) in patients with diabetes and matched control subjects.

Research Design And Methods: This study included 701,622 patients with diabetes from the Swedish National Diabetes Register and 2,738,137 control subjects. Trends were analyzed with standardized incidence rates.
