Objective: Pergolide, labeled for the treatment of pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction, is 90% protein bound and might cause a decrease in blood thyroid hormone concentrations by displacing them from binding proteins. This study investigated the effect of pergolide on the equine thyroid function.

Methods: This was an analytic, observational, cohort study.

Introduction: Probiotics have been investigated for their many health benefits and impact on the microbiota of the gut. Recent data have also supported a gut-lung axis regarding the bacterial populations (microbiomes) of the two locations; however, little research has been performed to determine the effects of oral probiotics on the microbiome of the bovine respiratory tract. We hypothesized that probiotic treatment would result in changes in the lung microbiome as measured in lung lavage fluid.

Probiotics have been investigated for many health benefits; however, few studies have been performed to determine the effects of oral probiotics on peripheral blood and respiratory immune cells in cattle. Our objectives were to determine changes in health and growth status, differential blood cell counts and function, and blood and lung cell function using flow cytometry and PCR in dairy calves fed a milk replacer with (PRO, N = 10) or without (CON, N = 10) the addition of probiotics to the milk replacer and dry rations from birth to weaning. Performance and clinical scores were not different between the treatment groups.

Article Synopsis
  • Equine thyroid disorders are complex to diagnose due to the horse's ability to tolerate fluctuations in thyroid hormone levels and the impact of various nonthyroidal factors on their thyroid axis.
  • While benign thyroid tumors are common in older horses, true conditions like hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism are rare, and there’s a misconception that low thyroid hormone levels in horses indicate hypothyroidism, particularly when linked to symptoms like obesity and poor performance.
  • Assessing thyroid function in horses involves measuring hormone levels, but interpretation is tricky, and dynamic tests can aid diagnosis; typically, thyroid hormone supplementation is used more for managing issues like obesity rather than treating true hypothyroidism, which is uncommon.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study analyzes 13 horses with a newly identified idiopathic hepatitis syndrome, characterized by symptoms like fever and elevated liver enzyme levels over a period of 16 months.
  • - Horses experienced cyclic fevers for about three weeks, with histological findings showing liver damage and inflammation, but none displayed signs of liver failure, and all recovered clinically.
  • - While the exact cause remains unknown, the research suggests a seasonal pattern and hints at a possible infectious origin based on the clinical symptoms and histological outcomes.

Background: It is important to determine if a horse is shedding Salmonella spp., but a complete culture series can be cost prohibitive.

Objectives: Determine the optimal pooling technique to maintain high sensitivity of Salmonella spp.

Objective: To determine the number and species of animals cared for by the PetSafe program at the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine (a community service offered to meet the short-term housing needs of pets, especially pets owned by victims of intimate partner violence) from 2004 through 2019 and collect information on duration of stay, outcome, health problems, and expenses.

Animals: 229 animals cared for by the PetSafe program.

Procedures: Medical records were reviewed for information on species, breed, age, duration of stay, outcome of stay, client referral source, whether the animal had been cared for previously, health problems, medical interventions, and expenses incurred.

Background: The use of thyroid supplement is pervasive in athletic horses although its effects on measures of performance are not known.

Objectives: One purpose of this study was to determine whether supra-physiologic doses of levothyroxine affect the velocities at which blood lactate was greater than 4 mmol/L (V ) and heart rate was over 150 (V ) and 200 (V ) beats per minute respectively. Additionally, a survey of post-race blood samples was also conducted to determine whether high thyroxine concentrations were common in racehorses.

Background: In metabolically stable horses, alpha-2-agonists suppress insulin secretion with transient hyperglycemia and rebound hyperinsulinemia. In horses with insulin dysregulation (ID), the effect of alpha-2-agonists has not been investigated; however, both the alpha-2-agonist-induced suppression of insulin secretion and rebound hyperinsulinemia could have clinical relevance.

Hypothesis/objectives: In horses with ID, alpha-2-agonists will alter insulin and glucose dynamics.

Objective: To investigate the effect of high doses of orally administered levothyroxine sodium (LT) on serum concentrations of triiodothyronine (T) and thyroxine (T) in euthyroid horses.

Animals: 12 healthy adult horses.

Procedures: 10 horses initially received water (vehicle) or 240 mg (5X treatment) or 480 mg (10× treatment) of LT, and blood samples were collected at baseline (0 hours) and 0.

Mammary carcinoma is rare in cattle with only a handful of cases found in the literature, and none have reported an associated hypercalcemia. An 8-year-old Holstein-Friesian heifer was presented to the Purdue University Veterinary Teaching Hospital's Large Animal Hospital with a 3-month history of lethargy. Laboratory abnormalities included ionized hypercalcemia and hypophosphatemia (2.

Anemia associated with intestinal parasites and malnutrition is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in small ruminants worldwide. Qualitative scoring of conjunctival redness has been developed so that farmers can gauge anemia in sheep and goats to identify animals that require treatment. For clinically relevant anemia diagnosis, complete blood count-comparable quantitative methods often rely on complicated and expensive optical instruments, requiring detailed spectral information of hemoglobin.
