Background: The γ-aminobutyric acid-B (GABA) receptor is a promising target for the development of new medications to treat alcohol use disorder (AUD). The GABA agonist baclofen has been reported to reduce alcohol consumption but is associated with some undesirable side effects, including sedation. ASP8062 is a novel compound that acts as a positive allosteric modulator at the GABA receptor and may be more tolerable than baclofen.

The diagnosis of CL in poor hyperendemic regions relies to large extent on the identification of amastigotes in Giemsa-stained smears. There is an urgent need for a rapid, sensitive and low cost diagnostic method for use in field conditions for CL as current modalities are not readily available.

Method: This was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 600 healthy adults.
Human infection with leads to obstruction of the common bile duct by adult worms and disease characterized by biliary colic, epigastric pain, and nausea. Recommended treatment is a single dose of triclabendazole (TCBZ) (10 mg/kg). Because in the 1990s the Bolivian Altiplano bordering Lake Titicaca was thought to have the highest prevalence of human fascioliasis worldwide, the Bolivian Ministry of Health instituted TCBZ mass drug administration (MDA).

Cure rates of an index lesion were approximately 80%. As a follow on, we conducted a similar Phase 3 trial in Panama to demonstrate the efficacy of these treatments against New World species.

The purpose of this study was to conduct a large, multisite clinical trial of gabapentin enacarbil extended-release (GE-XR) (HORIZANT ), a gabapentin prodrug formulation, to determine its safety and efficacy in treating alcohol use disorder (AUD).
Methods: Men and women (n = 346) who met DSM-5 criteria for at least moderate AUD were recruited across 10 U.
Background: The short dating period of room temperature-stored platelets (PLTs; 5-7 days) limits their availability at far-forward combat facilities and at remote civilian sites in the United States. PLT cryopreservation in 6% DMSO and storage for up to 2 years may improve timely availability for bleeding patients.
Study Design And Methods: A dose escalation trial of DMSO-cryopreserved PLTs (CPPs) compared to standard liquid-stored PLTs (LSPs) was performed in bleeding patients with thrombocytopenia.

Alcohol use disorder has been linked to dysregulation of the brain stress systems, producing a negative emotional state leading to chronic relapsing behavior. Vasopressin receptors appear to have a regulatory role in stress, anxiety, and alcohol. This study evaluated the novel compound, ABT-436, a V1b receptor antagonist, in alcohol-dependent participants in a 12-week clinical trial.

In vivo DMSO cryopreserved platelet studies published between 1972 and June of 2013 were reviewed. Assessed were the methods of cryopreservation, posttransfusion platelet responses, prevention or control of bleeding, and adverse events.

The investigational creams were applied topically to all lesions once daily for 20 days.

The index lesion cure rate after 6 months follow-up was 13 of 15 (87%) for WR 279,396 and 9 of 15 (60%) for Paromomycin Alone (P = 0.

Varenicline is a partial α4β2 nicotinic acetylcholine agonist approved by the Food and Drug Administration for smoking cessation. It has reduced drinking in animal studies and in small studies of humans who were both heavy drinkers and smokers.

Methods: We conducted a randomized, vehicle-controlled phase 3 trial of topical treatments containing 15% paromomycin, with and without 0.5% gentamicin, for cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania major in Tunisia.
Background: Availability of platelets (PLTs) is severely limited by shelf life in some settings. Our objective was to determine and compare to Food and Drug Administration (FDA) criteria the PLT recovery and survival of autologous PLTs cryopreserved at -65°C or less in 6% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) reconstituted with a no-wash method (cryopreserved PLTs [CPPs]) compared to autologous fresh PLTs.
Study Design And Methods: This was a randomized, Phase I study analyzing PLT viability and in vitro function in consenting healthy subjects.
Background: Despite advances in the development of medications to treat alcohol dependence, few medications have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFImmunization with BioThrax(®) (Anthrax Vaccine Adsorbed) is a safe and effective means of preventing anthrax. Animal studies have demonstrated that the addition of CpG DNA adjuvants to BioThrax can markedly increase the immunogenicity of the vaccine, increasing both serum anti-protective antigen (PA) antibody and anthrax toxin-neutralizing antibody (TNA) concentrations. The immune response to CpG-adjuvanted BioThrax in animals was not only stronger, but was also more rapid and led to higher levels of protection in spore challenge models.

BC-819 is a DNA plasmid that contains H19 gene regulatory sequences that drive the expression of an intracellular toxin.
Materials And Methods: A total of 18 patients in 4 groups of 3 and 1 group of 6 received escalating doses of BC-819 intravesically during 7 weeks.
