As a second messenger, the free cytosolic calcium ion (Ca(2+)) plays important roles in many biochemical and physiological processes including photosynthesis in plants. In this study, we investigated morphological changes, chlorophyll accumulation and chloroplast development during early photomorphogenesis in etiolated seedlings of both Arabidopsis thaliana wild type (WT) and those with the antisense of CAS, a calcium sensor (CASas). Seedlings were grown at high, medium and low Ca(2+) concentrations to identify the roles of Ca(2+) and CAS in de-etiolation and chloroplast development.

In low resource settings the inability to diagnose HIV in infants early presents a major obstacle to providing care for HIV-infected children. Dried blood spot samples offer a solution to the scarcity of skills available for venesecting young infants but pose challenges to laboratories because their processing requirements are distinct from that of the liquid blood samples widely used for viral detection assays. The induction of bone formation requires three parameters that interact in a highly regulated process: soluble osteoinductive signals, capable responding cells, and a supporting matrix substratum or insoluble signal. The use of recombinant and naturally derived bone morphogenetic proteins and transforming growth factor beta(s) (TGF-beta(s)) has increased our understanding of the functions of these morphogens during the induction of endochondral bone formation. In addition, growing understanding of the cellular interactions of living tissues with synthetic biomaterials has led to the in vivo induction of bone formation using porous biomimetic matrices as an alternative to the use of autografts for bone regeneration.
