The study evaluates the effectiveness and safety of medical thoracoscopy (MT) for diagnosing malignant pleural effusions (MPEs) in 141 patients from January 2020 to December 2022 at a tertiary hospital.
It found a high diagnostic accuracy of 95.7%, with lung and breast cancers being the most frequently diagnosed types, and molecular profiling for cancer mutations was successfully completed for all malignancy cases.
Major complications were rare, occurring in only 2.1% of patients, and overall, MT proved to be a safe and beneficial procedure in managing suspected MPEs without significant adverse outcomes.
