The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) has a well-established key pathophysiologic role in kidney diseases, and pharmacotherapy targeting this system is a mainstay of treatment of affected human beings, cats, and dogs. Several studies have evaluated the circulating RAAS in animals with spontaneous or experimentally induced kidney diseases. Evidence supporting the activation of this system has been demonstrated in some - but not all - studies and individuals, and the interindividual variability in circulating RAAS markers is high.

Granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) mobilizes hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPC) into the peripheral blood. Donor peripheral blood platelet loss has been observed during both G-CSF mobilization and apheresis collection. This study evaluates two strategies to reduce donor platelet loss, preserve product CD34+ cell yield and collection efficiency and increase volume of whole blood (WB) processed.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to evaluate two cases of filamentary keratitis in patients with high levels of anti-CCP antibodies, typically associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), but without prior RA diagnosis.
  • The first patient, a 77-year-old man, showed no development of RA over three years, while the second patient, an 84-year-old man, developed RA 16 months after presenting with severe eye symptoms.
  • The findings suggest that elevated anti-CCP levels in patients with filamentary keratitis might be an early indicator of RA, highlighting the need for further research on the connection between anti-CCP antibodies and eye conditions in RA.

Background: We have previously studied the physiological and mechanical responses of the eye to blunt trauma in various situations using finite element analysis (FEA). In this study, we evaluated the volume kinetics of an airbag impact on the eye using FEA to sequentially determine the volume change rates of intraocular segments at various airbag deployment velocities.

Methods: The human eye model we created was used in simulations with the FEA program PAM-GENERIS (Nihon ESI, Tokyo, Japan).

Background: Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a common hospital-acquired infection in neonates on invasive mechanical ventilation, resulting in high morbidity and mortality. The objective of this study is to determine the incidence, risk factors, short-term outcomes and microbiome associated with VAP in very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) infants born at <32 weeks of gestational age (GA).

Methods: Retrospective study of intubated VLBW infants born at <32 weeks of GA admitted to the Los Angeles General Medical Center neonatal intensive care unit from July 2015 to July 2021 who had routine tracheal aspirate cultures obtained.

Purpose: We studied the kinetic phenomenon of an airbag impact on eyes after trabeculectomy using finite element analysis (FEA), a computerized method for predicting how an object reacts to real-world physical effects and showing whether an object will break, to sequentially determine the responses at various airbag deployment velocities.

Methods: A human eye model was used in the simulations using the FEA program PAM-GENERIS (Nihon ESI, Tokyo, Japan). A half-thickness incised scleral flap was created on the limbus and the strength of its adhesion to the outer sclera was set at 30%, 50%, and 100%.

Diabetic eye disease (DED) is a leading cause of blindness in the world. Early detection and treatment of DED have been shown to be both sight-saving and cost-effective. As such, annual testing for DED is recommended for adults with diabetes and is a Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) measure.

Article Synopsis
  • The study tested the combination of zandelisib (a PI3Kδ inhibitor) and zanubrutinib (a BTK inhibitor) to see if they would work better together and prevent resistance in patients with relapsed/refractory B-cell cancers.
  • It involved 70 patients, with a recommended dosage of 60 mg zandelisib for Days 1-7 and 80 mg zanubrutinib twice daily over a 28-day cycle.
  • The results showed an 87% response rate for follicular lymphoma and 74% for mantle cell lymphoma, with manageable side effects, indicating that the combination treatment is effective without increased toxicity.

Purpose: We evaluated the efficacy of bevacizumab, alone and in combination with irinotecan, in patients with recurrent glioblastoma in a phase II, multicenter, open-label, noncomparative trial.

Patients And Methods: One hundred sixty-seven patients were randomly assigned to receive bevacizumab 10 mg/kg alone or in combination with irinotecan 340 mg/m or 125 mg/m (with or without concomitant enzyme-inducing antiepileptic drugs, respectively) once every 2 weeks. Primary end points were 6-month progression-free survival and objective response rate, as determined by independent radiology review.

This study aims to evaluate the effect of assessing velocity time integral at different locations across ventricular outflow tracts for calculating cardiac output (CO) in neonates. Velocity time integral (VTI) and CO were measured at 3 different locations across right and left ventricular outflow tracts using transthoracic echocardiography in healthy term neonates without any major congenital heart disease. ANOVA with Bonferroni correction was used to determine the differences between the VTI and CO sampled at these three locations.

Objectives: Our aim was to compare Health Link utilization in urban and rural Alberta by metrics relevant to the ED.

Methods: Data on Health Link callers from January 1, 2018-December 31, 2019 was extracted from the National Ambulatory Care Reporting System, including postal code, location of ED attended, Canadian Triage Acuity Scale (CTAS) assigned at ED, age, and self-identified gender. Usage density (presentations/100/year), patient demographics (age, self-identified gender), and ED metrics (CTAS, investigations, admission) were compared for Health Link ED referrals and direct ED visits.

Ibrutinib, a Bruton's tyrosine kinase inhibitor, is often used as first-line (1L) treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL); however, it is associated with an increased risk for cardiovascular adverse events (CVAEs). This real-world study adds to existing literature by simultaneously investigating the correlation between pre-existing CV risk factors and the relative cardiotoxicity of ibrutinib vs other therapies in CLL/small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL). Using a real-world database, the risk of subsequent CVAEs (any CVAE, atrial fibrillation [AF], or hypertension) were compared among patients who received 1L ibrutinib monotherapy or another type of non-ibrutinib therapy, grouped as intensive (IT) or non-intensive therapy (NIT).

Background: We hypothesised that zanubrutinib, a highly selective next-generation Bruton tyrosine kinase (BTK) inhibitor, would be a safe and active treatment for patients intolerant of ibrutinib, acalabrutinib, or both. We aimed to assess whether zanubrutinib would prolong treatment duration by minimising treatment-related toxicities and discontinuations in patients with previously treated B-cell malignancies.

Methods: This ongoing, phase 2, multicentre, open-label, single-arm study was done in 20 centres in the USA.

Postnatal neurogenesis provides an opportunity to understand how newborn neurons integrate into circuits to restore function. Newborn olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) wire into highly organized olfactory bulb (OB) circuits throughout life, enabling lifelong plasticity and regeneration. Immature OSNs form functional synapses capable of evoking firing in OB projection neurons but what contribution, if any, they make to odor processing is unknown.
