Background: Experimental studies demonstrate that granulocyte colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) promotes neovascularisation and confers cardioprotection.

Objective: To assess the efficacy of repeated low dose G-CSF plus exercise on myocardial ischaemia in patients with severe chronic ischaemic heart disease.

Methods: 18 patients with Canadian Cardiovascular Society class III-IV angina completed a randomised, double blind, crossover study of dose adjusted G-CSF versus placebo.

Background: Grade 3 ischemia during ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is defined as ST elevation with distortion of the terminal portion of the QRS on electrocardiogram (ECG). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of ischemic grade on cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging infarct characteristics such as infarct size, microvascular obstruction (MVO), intramyocardial hemorrhage (IMH), and myocardial salvage.

Background: persistent ST elevation after reperfused ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is believed to be related to poor microvascular perfusion. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) can evaluate microvascular obstruction (MVO) and intramyocardial haemorrhage (IMH) both of which represent severe microvascular damage, have independent prognostic value and are dynamic and evolving over the first 48hours after reperfusion. Aims: Neuregulin-1 (NRG-1) plays a critical role in the adaptation of the heart to injury, inhibiting apoptosis and inducing cardiomyocyte proliferation. We have shown previously that rhNRG-1 improves cardiac function and survival in animal models of cardiomyopathy. Here we report the first human study aimed at exploring the acute and chronic haemodynamic responses to recombinant human NRG-1 (beta(2a) isoform; rhNRG-1) in patients with stable chronic heart failure (CHF).

Multivessel coronary ventricular fistulae is a rare coronary anomaly whose origin is believed to be from an arterioluminal or arteriosinusoidal connection with the ventricle. The clinical and haemodynamic significance of these fistulae have been a source of controversy despite varying methods of evaluation. Background: In early pregnancy, a substantial drop in arterial blood pressure occurs, that might be attributed to enhanced vascular nitric oxide synthesis. We investigated whether nitric oxide mediates the vasodilation that occurs in early human pregnancy.

Methods: Resting and stimulated forearm vascular resistance were measured (venous occlusion plethysmograph) in six women at 10 +/- 3 weeks of uncomplicated pregnancy and in the same women 7 +/- 5 weeks after elective termination of pregnancy.

Purpose: Inferior attenuation is a common problem in the interpretation of myocardial perfusion SPECT. We explored whether cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) was a useful adjunct in differentiating between artifactual attenuation of the inferior wall and the presence of myocardial infarction and/or ischemia.

Methods: We used CMR to assess resting wall motion, myocardial perfusion, and the presence of infarction with late gadolinium enhancement in 30 patients with presumed inferior attenuation on ungated myocardial perfusion SPECT, but where uncertainty was present over interpretation of the inferior wall.

Objectives: This study investigated the effects of androgens on gene expression in male- and female-donor macrophages.

Background: Men have more severe coronary disease than women. Androgen exposure increases foam cell formation in male but not female macrophages, and male macrophages express >4-fold more androgen receptor messenger ribonucleic acid than female macrophages.

Objectives: We sought to assess whether hyperenhancement by gadolinium cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) occurs in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and correlates with the risk of heart failure and sudden death.

Background: The myocardial interstitium is abnormal in HCM at post-mortem. Focally increased interstitial myocardial space appears as hyperenhancement with gadolinium CMR.
