Background: BDNF has increasingly gained attention as a key molecule controlling remyelination with a prominent role in neuroplasticity and neuroprotection. Still, it remains unclear how BDNF relates to clinicoradiological characteristics particularly at the early stage of the disease where precise prognosis for the further MS course is crucial.

Methods: BDNF, NfL and GFAP concentrations in serum and CSF were assessed in 106 treatment naïve patients with MS (pwMS) as well as 73 patients with other inflammatory/non-inflammatory neurological or somatoform disorders using a single molecule array HD-1 analyser.

Due to the increasing workload of pathologists, the need for automation to support diagnostic tasks and quantitative biomarker evaluation is becoming more and more apparent. Foundation models have the potential to improve generalizability within and across centers and serve as starting points for data efficient development of specialized yet robust AI models. However, the training of foundation models themselves is usually very expensive in terms of data, computation, and time.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the utility of neurofilament light chain (NfL), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase L1 (UCHL1) and total tau (tTAU) serum concentrations as approximation for cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) concentrations of the respective biomarkers in the context of neuroinflammation and multiple sclerosis (MS).

Methods: NfL, GFAP, UCHL1 and tTAU concentrations in serum and CSF were measured in 183 patients (122 with neuroinflammatory disease and 61 neurological or somatoform disease controls) using the single molecule array HD-1 analyzer (Quanterix, Boston, MA). Spearman's rank correlations were computed between serum and CSF concentrations.

Background: Definitions of aggressive MS employ clinical and MR imaging criteria to identify highly active, rapidly progressing disease courses. However, the degree of overlap between clinical and radiological parameters and biochemical markers of CNS injury is not fully understood. Aim of this cross-sectional study was to match clinical and MR imaging hallmarks of aggressive MS to serum/CSF markers of neuroaxonal and astroglial injury (neurofilament light chain (sNfL, cNfL), and glial fibrillary acidic protein (sGFAP, cGFAP)).

Palladium films hold signicance due to their remarkable affinity for hydrogen diffusion, rendering them valauble for the seperation and purification of hydrogen in membrane reactors. However, palladium is expensive, and its films can become brittle after only a few cycles of hydrogen separation. Alloying with silver has been shown to overcome the problem of palladium embrittlement.

The seventh pandemic of the diarrheal cholera disease, which began in 1960, is caused by the Gram-negative bacterium . Its environmental persistence provoking recurring sudden outbreaks is enabled by rapid adaption to changing environments involving sensory proteins like ToxR and ToxS. Located at the inner membrane, ToxR and ToxS react to environmental stimuli like bile acid, thereby inducing survival strategies for example bile resistance and virulence regulation.

Background: Biomarkers of disease activity have been intensively studied in multiple sclerosis (MS) but knowledge on predictors of disability improvement is limited. The aim of this pilot study was to explore whether increased brain-derived neurotrophic factor concentrations in serum and CSF (sBDNF/cBDNF) precede neurological and cognitive improvement in MS.

Methods: In this pilot, monocentric prospective cohort study we collected serum/CSF samples at baseline together with EDSS (n = 36) and cognitive testing (n = 34) in patients with relapsing-remitting/primary progressive MS or clinically isolated syndrome.

Background And Objectives: To increase the validity of biomarker measures in multiple sclerosis (MS), factors affecting their concentration need to be identified. Here, we test whether the volume of distribution approximated by the patients' estimated blood volume (BV) and body mass index (BMI) affect the serum concentrations of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP). As a control, we also determine the relationship between BV/BMI and GFAP concentrations in CSF.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a thermoplastic polyester with numerous applications in industry. However, it requires surface modification on an industrial scale for printing and coating processes and plasma treatment is one of the most commonly used techniques to increase the hydrophilicity of the PET films. Systematic improvement of the surface modification by adaption of the plasma process can be aided by a comprehensive understanding of the surface morphology and chemistry.

Background: Cognitive performance may be impaired in MS even at the earliest stages of disease. We tested whether brain-derived neurotrophic factor and neurofilament light chain levels in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples (sNfL/cNfL/sBDNF/cBDNF) collected at the time of diagnosis are associated with cognitive performance.

Methods: We measured sNfL/cNfL/sBDNF/cBDNF using single-molecule array (Simoa) in 47 newly diagnosed patients (32 relapsing-remitting MS/6 primary progressive MS/9 clinically isolated syndrome).

Polypropylene (PP) surgical mesh, used successfully for the surgical repair of abdominal hernias, is associated with serious clinical complications when used in the pelvic floor for repair of stress urinary incontinence or support of pelvic organ prolapse. While manufacturers claim that the material is inert and non-degradable, there is a growing body of evidence that asserts PP fibres are subject to oxidative damage and indeed explanted material from patients suffering with clinical complications has shown some evidence of fibre cracking and oxidation. It has been proposed that a pathological cellular response to the surgical mesh contributes to the medical complications; however, the mechanisms that trigger the specific host response against the material are not well understood.

The aim of the present work was to investigate the 'fine granular area' (FGA) formation based on artificially generated internal defects in additively manufactured Ti6Al4V specimens in the early stage of fatigue crack growth in the 'very high cycle fatigue' (VHCF) regime. Fatigue tests were performed with constant amplitude at pure tension-compression loading ( = -1) using an ultrasonic fatigue testing setup. Failed specimens were investigated using optical microscopy, high-resolution 'scanning electron microscopy' (SEM), and 'focused ion beam' (FIB) techniques.

Vaccination programs are considered a central pillar of the efforts to stop COVID-19. However, vaccine doses are scarce and several organizational and logistical obstacles, such as the timing of and reserves for second shots and delivery failures, apparently slow down vaccination roll-outs in several countries. Moreover, it is an open question as to where vaccines are administered as efficiently as possible (vaccination centers, hospitals, doctor's offices, pharmacists, etc.

Plasma-generated compounds (PGCs) such as plasma-processed air (PPA) or plasma-treated water (PTW) offer an increasingly important alternative for the control of microorganisms in hard-to-reach areas found in several industrial applications including the food industry. To this end, we studied the antimicrobial capacity of PTW on the vitality and biofilm formation of , a common foodborne pathogen. Using a microwave plasma (MidiPLexc), 10 ml of deionized water was treated for 100, 300, and 900 s (pre-treatment time), after which the bacterial biofilm was exposed to the PTW for 1, 3, and 5 min (post-treatment time) for each pre-treatment time, separately.

Understanding the effects that sterilization methods have on the surface of a biomaterial is a prerequisite for clinical deployment. Sterilization causes alterations in a material's surface chemistry and surface structures that can result in significant changes to its cellular response. Here we compare surfaces resulting from the application of the industry standard autoclave sterilisation to that of surfaces resulting from the use of low-pressure Argon glow discharge within a novel gas permeable packaging method in order to explore a potential new biomaterial sterilisation method.

A metadata schema, named Plasma-MDS, is introduced to support research data management in plasma science. Plasma-MDS is suitable to facilitate the publication of research data following the FAIR principles in domain-specific repositories and with this the reuse of research data for data driven plasma science. In accordance with common features in plasma science and technology, the metadata schema bases on the concept to separately describe the source generating the plasma, the medium in which the plasma is operated in, the target the plasma is acting on, and the diagnostics used for investigation of the process under consideration.

Several concepts for platinum-based catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are presented that exceed the US Department of Energy targets for Pt-related ORR mass activity. Most concepts achieve their high ORR activity by increasing the Pt specific activity at the expense of a lower electrochemically active surface area (ECSA). In the potential region controlled by kinetics, such a lower ECSA is counterbalanced by the high specific activity.
