General approach to low-molecular-weight metallogelators via the coordination-induced gelation of an L-glutamate-based lipid.

A twin-tailed glutamate-based lipid with a pyridine headgroup was prepared in good yield using standard amide coupling and protection/deprotection chemistry. The resulting Lewis basic lipid gels a wide array of hydrocarbon solvents at a critical gelation concentration (C(g)) of 0.3 wt %.

Impact of aspirin intolerance on outcomes of sinus surgery.

Objectives: To compare objective and quality of life (QOL) outcomes after endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) in aspirin (ASA)-tolerant patients and ASA-intolerant patients over intermediate and long-term follow-up.

Study Design: Prospective analysis of a cohort of patients with chronic rhinosinusitis.

Methods: Preoperative computed tomography (CT), pre- and postoperative endoscopy, and two validated disease specific QOL instruments, the Rhinosinusitis Disability Index (RSDI) and Chronic Sinusitis Survey (CSS), were collected.

Impact of age on presentation of chronic rhinosinusitis and outcomes of endoscopic sinus surgery.

Background: As the population ages, the mean age of patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) likely will increase as will the frequency of endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) in the older population. The purpose of this study was to compare symptom presentation, CT scores, endoscopy scores, and quality of life (QOL) measures in patients >60 years of age as compared with younger patients.

Methods: A prospective cohort of 18 patients >60 years and 121 patients < or =60 years undergoing ESS for CRS were studied.

Objective voice measures in nonsinging patients with unilateral superior laryngeal nerve paresis.

The clinical value of objective voice measures in nonsinging patients with superior laryngeal nerve dysfunction is unknown. In this study, patients with symptomatic unilateral superior nerve paresis were evaluated for maximum phonation time, frequency range of phonation, and mean flow rate. Patients with coexisting pathology, bilateral superior nerve paresis, and those with recurrent laryngeal nerve paresis were excluded from this analysis.

Cervical sympathetic chain schwannoma.

Objectives: Schwannomas are benign, slow-growing tumors that arise from nerves. Those originating from the sympathetic cervical chain are rare. We describe our experience with the clinical presentation, surgical management, and outcomes of patients with this pathology.
