HDL-C is an established risk marker for coronary heart disease. We investigated sociodemographic, lifestyle, anthropometric/physiologic, and other predictors of HDL-C over 30 years of follow-up in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study, a multicenter, longitudinal cohort with a baseline exam in 1985-86 and follow-up exams at least every five years through 2016. During exams, participants completed various questionnaires, anthropometric measurements, and blood collection.

Background: One approach to test for differential associations between plant foods with health uses a scoring approach: foods categorized into animal or 'healthy' plant-based or 'unhealthy' plant-based groups to construct a plant-based diet index (PDI), healthy PDI (hPDI), and unhealthy PDI (uPDI).

Objective: To evaluate robustness of associations between diet indices and incident coronary heart disease (CHD) risk when recategorizing food groups in indices.

Methods: Using REasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) data, we replicated a published use of the scoring approach.

Aim: To investigate metabolic risk factors (RFs) that accumulated over 20 years related to left ventricular mass index (LVMI), relative wall thickness (RWT) and LV remodelling patterns in participants with versus without early-onset type 2 diabetes (T2D) or prediabetes (pre-D).

Methods: A total of 287 early-onset T2D/pre-D individuals versus 565 sociodemographic-matched euglycaemic individuals were selected from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study, years 0-25. We used the area under the growth curve (AUC) derived from quadratic random-effects models of four or more repeated measures of RFs (fasting glucose [FG], insulin, triglycerides [TG], low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), total cholesterol (total-c), blood pressure and body mass index) to estimate the cumulative burden, and their associations with LV outcomes.

Background And Aims: Numerous prospective studies have examined sugar sweetened beverage (SSB) intake associated with weight gain or incident obesity. Because SSB accounts for only 33 % of added sugar (AS) intake, we investigated the associations of AS intake with change in weight and waist circumference and risk of developing obesity.

Methods And Results: At baseline (1985-86) Black and White women and men, aged 18-30 years, enrolled in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study and were followed for 30 years (2015-16).

Aims: Numerous studies report positive associations between total carbohydrate (CHO) intake and incident metabolic syndrome (MetS), but few differentiate quality or type of CHO relative to MetS. We examined source of CHO intake, including added sugar (AS), AS-rich CHO foods, and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) associated with incident MetS in adults enrolled in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study.

Methods And Results: Among 3154 Black American and White American women and men aged 18-30 years at baseline, dietary intake was assessed by diet history three times over 20 years.

Background: Aging is associated with changes in body composition, and preventing loss of muscle mass and accumulation of excess adipose tissue in middle-aged adults may reduce age-related conditions at older ages. Dietary intake is one lifestyle factor shown to improve or maintain body composition. However, few studies have examined the Healthy Eating Index2015 (HEI2015), a measure of diet quality, and the association with body composition in adult men and women.

Article Synopsis
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major health issue, and preventing emphysema development, particularly in smokers, is crucial for COPD mitigation.
  • A study analyzed 1,706 young adults, assessing their adherence to a plant-centered diet over 30 years and its effects on emphysema risk, finding that a richer diet was linked to lower emphysema prevalence.
  • Results indicated that individuals in the highest dietary quality quintile had a significantly lower rate of emphysema (4.5%) compared to those in the lowest quintile (25.4%), suggesting diet may be an effective prevention strategy for smokers at risk.

Background: Mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP) on ambulatory blood pressure (BP) monitoring (ABPM) are higher among Black compared with White adults. With 48 to 72 BP measurements obtained over 24 h, ABPM can generate parameters other than mean BP that are associated with increased risk for cardiovascular events. There are few data on race differences in ABPM parameters other than mean BP.

Background: Artificial sweetener (ArtSw) intakes have been previously associated with higher BMI in observational studies and may promote visceral and skeletal muscle adipose tissue (AT) accumulation. This study aimed to determine whether habitual, long-term ArtSw or diet beverage intakes are related to greater AT depot volumes and anthropometry-related outcomes.

Methods: A validated diet history questionnaire was administered at baseline, year 7, and year 20 examinations in 3088 men and women enrolled in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults cohort (CARDIA), mean age of 25.

Introduction-Oxidative stress is linked to cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and is suggested to vary by sex. However, few population-level studies have explored these associations and the majority comprise populations with advanced CVD. We assessed urinary isoprostane concentrations, a standard measure of oxidative stress, in a relatively young and healthy cohort, hypothesizing that higher oxidative stress is associated with an adverse cardiometabolic profile and female sex.
