Building a new life: a chaplain's theory based case study of chronic illness.

This article presents the case study of spiritual care for a patient suffering from Parkinson's disease who was referred to the chaplain in an out-patient depression research program. The chaplain's interventions were informed by an application of narrative theory, and the article demonstrates how this theory enabled the chaplain to help a patient develop new coping strategies for dealing with chronic disease. Using narrative theory, the chaplain assisted the patient to develop a new sense of identity as a spiritual, contingent self as the disease eroded his physical self and former life.

Screening for spiritual struggle.

A growing body of research documents the harmful effects of religious or spiritual struggle among patients with a wide variety of diagnoses. We developed a brief screening protocol for use in identifying patients who may be experiencing religious/spiritual struggle, as well as patients who would like a visit from a chaplain. We describe the results of a pilot study in which non-chaplain healthcare colleagues administered the screening protocol to patients admitted to an acute medical rehabilitation unit.

An analytical method for the analysis of tulathromycin, an equilibrating triamilide, in bovine and porcine plasma and lung.

Tulathromycin is a novel member of the triamilide class of antibiotics that was developed as a safe and effective single-dose treatment of bovine and porcine respiratory disease. An accurate and precise analytical method was developed for the extraction and measurement of tulathromycin in livestock plasma and lung homogenates. Analytes were solid-phase extracted onto a weak cation exchanger after aqueous dilution of samples and addition of heptadeutero-tulathromycin as an internal standard.
