Purpose: To compare visual outcomes and recurrence rates between pro re nata (PRN), treat-and-extend and stop (TES), and treat-and-extend with chronic maintenance dosing (TEM) regimens of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) injections for myopic macular neovascularization (MNV) in multiethnic patients.

Methods: This retrospective study included patients treated with PRN, TES, or TEM for myopic MNV using intravitreal bevacizumab or ranibizumab. The primary outcome measure was visual improvement at 12 months.

Purpose: To evaluate outcomes of eyes with postcataract surgery endophthalmitis that were managed without microbial cultures.

Design: This retrospective, single-center comparative cohort study identified all cases of endophthalmitis after cataract surgery presenting between February 1, 2014, and November 1, 2022.

Subjects: All eyes presenting with presumed endophthalmitis requiring in-office treatment with intravitreal antibiotics and either a vitreous or aqueous tap were included.

Introduction: Sympathetic ophthalmia (SO) is a rare bilateral granulomatous panuveitis that can follow surgical or nonsurgical ocular trauma in one eye. Because its diagnosis requires clinical-pathologic correlation, the true incidence of SO is unknown, and there is a need to understand the recent trends in risk factors and frequency of this condition.

Methods: Pathology records of all enucleated or eviscerated (ENEV) eyes at three pathology laboratories were reviewed.

Purpose: To describe the ophthalmological manifestations in transgender patients on gender-affirming hormone therapy.

Methods: A retrospective chart review study was conducted. Female-to-male (FTM) and male-to-female (MTF) transgenders on gender-affirming hormone therapy evaluated at a single center were included.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to analyze the relationship between immunosuppression and overall as well as cancer-specific mortality in patients with noninfectious ocular inflammatory disease.
  • Researchers examined data from over 15,000 patients over a median of 10 years and found there were 1970 deaths, with 435 attributed to cancer.
  • The results indicated that patients on various immunosuppressants experienced similar mortality rates compared to the general U.S. population, suggesting that these treatments did not significantly increase overall or cancer mortality risk.

Purpose: To evaluate the rate of, risk factors for, and outcomes of cataract surgery in patients with intermediate, posterior, and panuveitides treated with systemic corticosteroids and immunosuppression.

Design: Cohort study of participants from a randomized clinical trial.

Methods: A multicenter clinical trial with extended follow-up comprised the study setting.

Purpose: To describe new histological findings involving the inner retina in birdshot chorioretinopathy.

Methods: Evaluation of the inner retinal pathology of the eye of a patient with bilateral birdshot chorioretinopathy who underwent enucleation for a unilateral ciliochoroidal melanoma.

Results: Histopathological sections showed focal perivascular lymphocytic infiltration at the optic nerve head that extended into the adjacent inner retina, mainly involving the ganglion and nerve fiber layers.

Purpose Of Review: The aim of this study was to update visual outcomes, microbial spectrum and complications in eyes with endophthalmitis following cataract surgery.

Recent Findings: A single-institution, retrospective review of eyes treated for endophthalmitis following cataract surgery between 2 January 2014 and 10 January 2017. This study included 112 cases of endophthalmitis following cataract surgery, 58 of which were culture-positive (51.

Purpose: To assess the outcomes of glaucoma surgery in patients with a history of scleritis at a tertiary medical center.

Methods: The retrospective case series included patients with a history of scleritis who required glaucoma surgery between 4/2006 and 8/2021.

Results: Two hundred and eighty-one eyes of 259 patients had glaucoma and scleritis with 28 eyes (10%) of 25 patients requiring glaucoma surgery.

Purpose: To evaluate the outcomes of gonioscopy-assisted transluminal trabeculotomy (GATT) in adult eyes with uncontrolled uveitic glaucoma.

Methods: We reviewed 16 eyes from 13 patients. Surgical success was defined as intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction >20% from baseline or IOP between 5 and 21 mmHg by the 3-month visit while on a stable number or fewer IOP-lowering agents and no need for additional glaucoma surgery.

Background: Sarcoidosis, an idiopathic systemic disorder characterized by noncaseating granulomas, is often associated with granulomatous uveitis. Anterior segment involvement can present with mutton-fat keratic precipitates, anterior chamber cell, and iris nodules. Sarcoid associated posterior uveitis may present with vitritis, retinal vasculitis, and choroidal lesions.

Article Synopsis
  • The purpose of the study was to assess the outcomes of eyes that developed endophthalmitis after intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor injections, specifically comparing treatments with and without microbiologic cultures.
  • The study included 165 cases from July 2013 to September 2019, dividing them into two groups: one that received microbiologic sampling while treated with antibiotics and another that did not send samples for culture.
  • Results showed that while there was a slight difference in visual acuity loss between the two groups at the 6-month follow-up, management without cultures may still be a viable strategy when microbiologic facilities are unavailable.

Purpose: To compare 2 mg intravitreal triamcinolone (IVT) versus 40 mg posterior sub-Tenon triamcinolone acetonide (STT) for the treatment of eyes with pseudophakic cystoid macular edema.

Methods: A retrospective, single-center review of eyes receiving 2 mg IVT between 3/1/2012-3/1/2017 and 40 mg STT between 1/1/2015-3/1/2017. Visual acuity (VA) and central macular thickness (CMT) were recorded at baseline, 1-, 3-, and 6-month follow-up visits.

Purpose: is a budding yeast that has a tropism for the central nervous system where it may cause meningitis, which has a high mortality rate. Endophthalmitis is rare and typically occurs in the setting of meningitis and disseminated disease. This report describes an atypical presentation of cryptococcal endophthalmitis and outlines the appropriate workup and management for this disease.
