Clonal complex 398 (CC398) livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA-MRSA) has been reported worldwide in a variety of food-animal species. Although CC398 is synonymous with LA-MRSA, community-associated MRSA (CA-MRSA) variants have emerged, including the Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL)-positive ST398-V and ST398 single-locus variant ST1232-V, and the PVL-negative ST398-V clones. We analysed individual patient data from a large prospective cohort study (Prosthetic Joint Infection in Australia and New Zealand, Observational (PIANO)) and found that causative organisms vary with the presentation type, with early post-operative infections more likely to be polymicrobial (41%) compared with late acute infections (10%). We thus propose empirical regimens tailored to the presentation type and presence or absence of sepsis.

This technique offers reduced radiation dose to patients, shorter time between injection and imaging and reduced time for image acquisition compared to the 'gold standard' nuclear imaging technique: gallium-67 (Ga-67) citrate scintigraphy.
Aims: To compare the two imaging modalities to ascertain whether Ga-68 citrate PET-CT is of equivalent diagnostic efficacy for bone and joint infection or pyrexia of unknown origin (PUO) and to assess image quality and reporter confidence.
In this study, linked Western Australian health data were used to determine presence of an antibiotic-resistant infection (ABRI) for all people diagnosed with a primary invasive cancer in 2009. Of 10 858 cancer cases, 154 (1.42%) had an ABRI.

Methods: From September 2007 to January 2009 at Royal Perth Hospital we tested for the PVL gene in S. aureus isolates from an invasive site, a suspected PVL-related soft tissue infection and all MRSA isolates.
In 2012, the Australian Group on Antimicrobial Resistance (AGAR) conducted a community-onset period-prevalence survey of clinical Staphylococcus aureus isolated from hospital outpatients and general practice patients including nursing homes, long term care facilities and hospice patients.
