Rationale: Vein calcite in Devils Hole has been precipitating continuously in oxygen-isotope equilibrium at a constant temperature for over 500 000 years, providing an unmatched δO paleoclimate time series. A substantial issue is that coeval calcite (based on matching δO values) has uranium-series ages differing by 12 000 years.

Methods: An unparalleled high-accuracy δO chronology series from continuously submerged calcite was used to correct the published uranium-series ages of non-continuously formed calcite in two cores, cyclically exposed by water-table decline during glacial-interglacial transitions.

Presented here is the first demonstration of supervised discretization to 'declutter' multivariate classification data in chemical sensor applications. The performance of multivariate classification models is often limited by the non-informative chemical variance within each target class; decluttering methods seek to reduce within-class variance while retaining between-class variance. Supervised discretization is shown to declutter classes in a manner that is superior to the state-of-the-art External Parameter Orthogonalization (EPO) by constructing a more parsimonious model with fewer parameters to optimize and is, consequently, less susceptible to overfitting and information loss.

Introduction: Uncontrolled hemorrhage models require sufficient quantities of donor blood products to support resuscitation. To that end, we describe a novel method of whole blood extraction from donor swine using resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) to support hemodynamics during terminal blood extraction and its impact on the quality of banked blood.

Aortopulmonary fistulas are a rare complication of aortic root replacements associated with aortic aneurysms. We describe a patient with a sinus of Valsalva pseudoaneurysm associated with a Freestyle root replacement that fistulized to a distal pulmonary valve homograft after having 2 prior aortic and pulmonary valve surgeries. Background: Partial and intermittent resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (pREBOA and iREBOA, respectively) are lifesaving techniques designed to extend therapeutic duration, mitigate ischemia, and bridge patients to definitive hemorrhage control. We hypothesized that automated pREBOA balloon titration compared with automated iREBOA would reduce blood loss and hypotensive episodes over a 90-minute intervention phase compared with iREBOA in an uncontrolled liver hemorrhage swine model.

The East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS) is currently surrounded by relatively cool water, but climatic shifts have the potential to increase basal melting via intrusions of warm modified Circumpolar Deep Water (mCDW) onto the continental shelf. Here we use an ice sheet model to show that under the current ocean regime, with only limited intrusions of mCDW, the EAIS will likely gain mass over the next 200 years due to the increased precipitation from a warming atmosphere outweighing increased ice discharge due to ice-shelf melting. However, if the ocean regime were to become dominated by greater mCDW intrusions, the EAIS would have a negative mass balance, contributing up to 48 mm of SLE over this time period.

Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) is a lifesaving intervention for major truncal hemorrhage. Balloon-tipped arterial catheters are inserted the femoral artery to create a temporary occlusion of the aorta, which minimizes the rate of internal bleeding until definitive surgery can be conducted.
