Purpose: To analyze the effect of hydrophobic and hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lens (IOL) material on the optical quality in pseudophakic eyes with a clear posterior capsule and assess in vitro forward light scatter of these IOLs.

Setting: St. Thomas' Hospital, London, United Kingdom.

Purpose: To determine whether the volume of retinal tissue passing between the inner and outer retina in macular edema could be used as an indicator of visual acuity.

Methods: Diabetic and uveitic patients with cystoid macular edema (81 subjects, 129 eyes) were recruited. Best corrected logMAR visual acuity and spectral optical coherence tomography (OCT/SLO; OTI, Toronto, ONT, Canada) were performed in all patients.

Purpose: To determine whether square-edged polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) intraocular lenses (IOLs) reduce posterior capsule opacification (PCO) in the context of extracapsular cataract surgery in a developing country.

Setting: A rural hospital in India.

Methods: This was a prospective randomized double-masked fellow-eye controlled study.

Purpose: To develop software to measure the severity of posterior capsule opacification (PCO) using analysis of retroillumination images and to correlate the results with clinical evaluation of PCO severity and visual function.

Setting: Department of Physics, King's College, and Department of Ophthalmology, St. Thomas' Hospital, London, United Kingdom.

Purpose: To model the pressure relationship between an intraocular lens (IOL) and the capsular bag.

Setting: Department of Physics, Kings' College, London University, London, United Kingdom.

Methods: A mathematical model was made of the forces between the capsule and IOL showing that the pressure related to the local radius of curvature of the IOL at any given point.
