Vortex retarders are optical retarders with a uniform retardance, but with a fast axis that varies azimuthally over the area of the optic. This affects the radial and azimuthal polarization components of the incoming beam. The vortex retarders discussed here generate TEM and TEM Laguerre-Gaussian beams.

Spina bifida is a congenital neural tube defect that results in abnormal development of the spine and central nervous system. Infants born with this condition face a range of physical disabilities and associated complications. Although the global burden has declined in recent decades due to folic acid fortification and prenatal screening, spina bifida remains a significant public health challenge in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is associated with high-risk HLA class II alleles known as the "RA shared epitope." Among prevalent shared epitope alleles, study of DRB1*04:04 has been limited. To define relevant epitopes, we identified citrullinated peptide sequences from synovial antigens that were predicted to bind to HLA-DRB1*04:04 and utilized a systematic approach to confirm their binding and assess their recognition by CD4 T cells.

Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) is a chronic autoimmune liver disease, characterized by progressive destruction of small intrahepatic bile ducts and portal inflammation. Treatment options are limited, with reliance on liver transplantation in advanced cases. The adaptive immune response is implicated in disease pathogenesis by the presence of anti-mitochondrial antibodies targeting the E2 subunit of the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDC-E2) in 90-95 % of patients and T cells infiltrating the portal tracts.

Patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models of lymphoma typically involve the injection of human tumor cells into an immunocompromised murine host. PDXs have the advantage that the tumor cells grow in a 3D environment within the mouse, meaning the selection pressure of in vitro establishment is avoided and the tumor cells better maintain their genetic heterogeneity. Here, we outline a method for producing and maintaining a PDX model of lymphoma.

Dietary restriction (DR) is widely considered to be one of the most potent approaches to extend healthy lifespan across various species, yet it has become increasingly apparent that DR-mediated longevity is influenced by biological and non-biological factors. We propose that current priorities in the field should include understanding the relative contributions of these factors to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of DR. Our work conducted in two laboratories, represents an attempt to unify DR protocols in and to investigate the stochastic effects of DR.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a potentially devastating autoimmune disease. The great majority of patients with RA are seropositive for anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPAs), rheumatoid factors, or other autoantibodies. The onset of clinically apparent inflammatory arthritis meeting classification criteria (clinical RA) is preceded by ACPA seropositivity for an average of 3-5 years, a period that is designated as 'at-risk' of RA for ACPA-positive individuals who do not display signs of arthritis, or 'pre-RA' for individuals who are known to have progressed to developing clinical RA.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the roles of two genes, Ocm and Slc26a5, in hearing loss in mice, focusing on their expression in outer hair cells and their potential interaction.
  • Mutations in both genes led to the absence of their respective mRNA and resulted in unique patterns of hearing dysfunction, indicating they don't regulate each other's expression.
  • Ocm mutants initially had normal hearing that deteriorated over time, while Slc26a5 mutants showed consistently elevated hearing thresholds, suggesting different mechanisms of auditory impairment related to outer hair cells.

Background/purpose: Sepsis is a leading cause of morbidity, mortality and healthcare utilisation for children worldwide, particularly in resource-limited regions. In Kumasi, Ghana, organ system failure and mortality in children who present to the emergency department (ED) with symptoms of sepsis are often due to late presentation and lack of recognition and implementation of time-critical evidence-based interventions. The purpose of this study was to assess the barriers and facilitators for families in seeking healthcare for their septic children; and to understand the barriers and facilitators for ED providers in Kumasi to recognise and implement sepsis bundle interventions.
