The Scientific Investigation Committee of the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry offers this review of select 2023 dental literature to briefly touch on several topics of interest to modern restorative dentistry. Association between obstructive sleep apnea and periodontitis in Chinese male adults: A cross-sectional study.

Statement Of Problem: An association between obstructive sleep apnea and periodontitis has been suggested, but supporting data are lacking.

Purpose: The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to investigate any association between obstructive sleep apnea and periodontitis in Chinese male adults.

Material And Methods: Ninety-three male adults (aged between 24 and 35 years) were recruited and examined between June and September 2019.

High-Resolution Pulse Oximetry and Titration of a Mandibular Advancement Device for Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

To determine whether utilizing high-resolution pulse oximetry is a viable method for evaluating the successful titration of oral appliances for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients. Of 136 consecutive potentially eligible OSA patients, 133 were fitted with mandibular advancement devices (MADs), and 101 completed all phases of treatment. The vertical and horizontal dimensions of the appliances were adjusted based on three-nights with a high-resolution pulse oximeter during sleep and associated software after each adjustment.

Methods And Materials: The authors, considered to be experts in their disciplines searched the scientific literature in 7 different areas (prosthodontics, periodontics, dental materials, occlusion and temporomandibular disorders, sleep-disordered breathing, oral medicine and oral and maxillofacial surgery and dental caries).
