Key Points: Acute kidney disease (AKD) and CKD are common conditions associated with high rates of incident infection, and poor outcomes once infection have been established. We successfully modeled AKD and CKD in rodents and then administered a cecal slurry solution to create peritonitis and tracked sepsis severity, end organ injury, and inflammatory changes. Our results indicate that AKD mice are more susceptible to infection than CKD mice, developing an aggravated inflammatory response and suggests that this condition predisposes to disparate infection risk.

Objective: We hypothesized that risk of both short and long term infection would be higher among patients with AKI and return to baseline creatinine than in propensity score matched peers without AKI in the year following a non-infectious hospital admission.
Purpose: Using the Delphi process, a panel of experienced preceptors achieved consensus on best practices to increase preceptor efficiency and effectiveness.
Methods: The Delphi panelists completed 3 survey rounds and a face-to-face meeting. Survey questions covered several topics, including preparation of students for rotations, preceptor efficiency and effectiveness, potential resident contributions to precepting, methods of developing critical-thinking skills and providing assessment and feedback, precepting time metrics, and barriers to preceptor effectiveness.

Objective: To assess whether the addition of a collaborative team learning technique would improve the learning experience on a general medicine in-patient team.
Methods: Eight learners participated in this pilot study.
Despite widespread concern about the potential risks of the use of social media, we are optimistic that social networks and blogs have the potential to enhance the practice of medicine by allowing clinicians to share ideas and information within the health care community, with patients, and with the general public. In particular, we believe that there can be value in posting information related to a patient encounter on social media, but only if care has been taken to consider the consequences of such a post from the patient's perspective. Thus, having a discussion with a patient and obtaining verbal consent before posting even deidentified patient information should become standard practice for all physicians who use social media.
